Optional notifications for when friends come online

Often I'm waiting for a friend to come online and I want to do something to pass the time, but I constantly have to flip back and forth to see whether they're there yet or not. It would be nice to have a feature where friends coming online would notify you, and could be enabled or disabled for those who may or may not want it.
