Discord mutes all other sounds
Whenever i get in a call, to a person or in the server, Discord mutes everything except the call. I changed the settings in the windows which reduces voices when in calls, changed the Discord options which lowers the volume when speaking with others etc. I tried to start other apps as administrator, still no sound. Worst part is after i exit the voice channel i have to wait like a minute to get my voice back. And when that happens, all the voice resources in my computer starts to play simultinously. Youtube videos, spotify or any video in the background just starts to play.
I tried my headphones, different headphones, without headphones, bluetooth headphone. My sound driver is up to date. This wasn't happening like 5-6 months ago. Also it doesnt happen in mobile version, only desktop.
I searched the internet, some other people have this problem too. But none of hte solutions listed there worked for me.

I had the same issue and had a hard time figuring out the solution. My Discord audio was refusing to merge with my game audio in my brand new Bluetooth headphones. I was able to resolve my issue by disabling the "hands free" portion of my device in the Manage sound devices window in windows.

I just want to say that having "Streamer Mode" enabled can also cause issues. Disabling it fixed my own.

For me what worked with my WH-1000XM3 headphones is when you go to Control Panel>Sound, the default is set to "WH-1000XM3 Stereo", once you change the default to "WH-1000XM3 Hands-Free AG Audio" everything works perfectly fine.

Hope this helps :)

The issue is Microsoft compability with Bluetooth devices. Generally Windows needs the mic and sound output too be separate. I "solved" it by putting the assigning the built in mic in my laptop as mic in both Windows and Discord. Works like a charm. Stupid that i would have to but its a solution.

For Steelseries Actics 9, changing the wireless transmitter from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 solved the dual-channel issue.

I had the same annoying problem. The fix was pretty easy. All I had to do was unpair my bluetooth headphones (Forget the device in Windows) and re-pair them. Then a quick discord restart later, the problem was fixed! Also: My current Input device is set to "Default" which I'm assuming is my headset and the output is set to "{Headphone Name} Stereo".

Has anyone managed to find a workable solution for mac devices? I can't find the solution from what the windows users here have said

If zou still have the problem and you have external mic and external headphones you need to have your discord mic setting NOT on default that was my problem xD

Same problem. Worked fine for months and then out of the blue when Discord launches, my sound to the speakers stop working until I reboot the computer. I can connect Bluetooth set and those will work but sound will not return to speakers once disconnect Bluetooth or close Discord. I tried removing the Bluetooth set, reboot, test sound and it works, then launch Discord, stops working again.
In the meantime, I did determine the problem is Discord gaining "ownership" of the microphone.. No idea what this ownership entails, I just know it doesn't go away when Discord is closed. I did try the method of going to system tray > right-clicking sound icon > left-clicking "Sounds" > click "Communications" > change to "Do Nothing". This did not work.
I removed the Bluetooth headphones (so only regular speakers attached), uninstalled Discord, rebooted computer. Tested sound and worked. Installed Discord, it launches and sound immediately cuts off. Re-added Bluetooth headphones and can hear sound that way but not back to speakers until perform a reboot.
What ultimately "fixed" the problem is disabling app access to the microphone in Windows 10 since for some inexplicable reason I can't specifically block only Discord from accessing it. Not ideal but I rarely use the microphone and can close discord and enable it for the times that I do.
To try this solution: Close Discord and then open Windows Settings > go to "Privacy" > in left column click "Microphone" > under "Allow apps to access your microphone" > toggle to "Off".
Discord, if only for privacy reasons, really should add the ability to On/Off access to microphone and speaker (each separately) in the app itself that is more than just a mute toggle at the bottom. If I want only Discord to not have access to my headset and microphone, that should be an option.
Based on google searches this is at least a four year problem. Its clear that Discord has filed it under "not my problem" so seems the options are cut off the microphone, switch to browser only version, or probably the healthier solution of simply stop using Discord all together.

Hi! i got a solution! it worked for me, so what I did was first go to the settings in DISCORD. Then go to Voice and Video, then change the input device to microphone array (if it wasn't already) and the output to Headphones (if it wasn't already) then is should work now.

Guys, check that "Automatically Enable/Disable" option in "Streamer Mode" category in Options isn't enabled. That toggled mute all other sounds for me.

I can't believe after trying every other solution, this was the problem the whole time! I totally didn't think about the input settings on what I thought was an output problem!

Well, I didn't saw anybody said that so here you go.
Had same issue and Carlos Almeida solution helped me, but not for long time. After this I just made windows "forgot" my device. And reconnected one more time as if it was first time.
Turn it off and back on is always a key.
Hope it'll help smb0 -
Just solved this issue after triyng all above. You definetly should checbox in communications section and manage discord settings, but the main problem hiiden in device manager, so do this:
1. Open device manager (right click on windows button or go trough controll panel)
2. Locate sound, gaming and video devices, unfold it
3. Found your device that u have in issue with.
4. Under device you should see the same device but with Hands free addition
5. Right click on it and turn it off
That's it

Hello there, here is a solution that will not remove any quality…
It was already mentioned that there is no enough bandwidth for the mic and speaker, however this is not just the problem. Any Bluetooth headphone connects 2 devices, one for audio only and the other one for communications, so all you have to do is disable the hands-free device, here is how to solve it using windows 10, my device is on Spanish but the solution will work:
On the taskbar, right-click the speaker icon then press the sounds option.
open the option (Playback), and find your headphones, you will see 2 options, right-click on the one that says hands-free and press disable.

Then select your headphones as default.
Extra - enter the communications tab on the top and set it to do nothing. click apply then accept, and done.
Now you can hear everything during the call, but what about the mic? Good news! you can still use your mic. By doing these steps you only disable the extra bandwidth for audio, meaning that you now can use your Bluetooth headphones as mic as well, for this only enter (discord settings > voice & video) select the input device as your headphone with the hands free.

Done :)1
