Discord auto update on macOS run from standard user OS account: wants admin privs, does not explain why
I intentionally run from a standard user OS account on my Mac to prevent nefarious, unknown software installs. Most other apps ask for an update and let me choose Later. I then do the following:
1) Quit the app.
2) Log out of my standard user account.
3) Do a backup (because not all updates are better) and test the backup.
4) Log into the admin OS account. Launch the app that asked for the update from there, let it update, quit the app.
5) Log out of admin OS account and back into standard user account. Re-launch the updated app and resume life.
But the Discord Mac doesn’t have the usual update interface. It just tries to update, asks for admin privileges and does not tell me what it wants to install. I cancel the admin auth dialog, Discord says the update fails, tries again, lets me in.
What is the Discord app trying to install?
Why does it need admin privileges?
The first time i see this, is that my hint to follow my own steps 1-5 above?
I’d feel a lot better about the Discord app if it or a link to this support site explained exactly what it was installing and why. Even better would be designing the app so it didn’t need these privileges. If that’s not an option (maybe due to what Apple is doing), perhaps having a more normal macOS update UI experience would help.
The existing app does eventually run—and i appreciate that—but each startup takes long enough that it makes me want to be on Discord less often.
