New mobile interface is horrible
This isn't just people hating change for the sake of hating change. This update has completely screwed over people's muscle memory for pretty much every aspect of the app. Moving DMs to a separate tab from servers makes absolutely no sense, and requires even more effort to get to than just being able to swipe left and find them alongside your servers, like you can on the desktop app. Widening the gap between desktop and mobile is a bad move; you're not running two different services so why would you, after years of maintaining the old interface on both desktop AND mobile, just now decide it's time for a “makeover”?
I've been using the mobile app for years. There wasn't much wrong with it design-wise, because it mirrored the desktop app like it should. But now that doesn't matter because everything I've been used to doing over the last few years got screwed over. I have to go out of my way to open a DM now. If I try to swipe right to see who's online or find a friend in a server, I now am prompted to reply to a message instead. Looking for settings in the profile tab? It's now a tiny button in the top right instead of letting you scroll down to find them (though the settings search is helpful, I don't think it warranted moving even more buttons around).
The new search bar is far from perfect as well. I appreciate the quick overview of media and links in their own separate tabs but this comes at the cost of completely hiding media previews in messages that you search for, which just hinders the search function if you're looking for something really specific. You also can't just type in a filter anymore, which I've grown used to doing over time both on desktop and mobile, and while the new button is somewhat convenient I don't see why we can't just have both. My biggest complaint with the new search is the fact that, when searching in a server, it will ONLY search for things in the specific channel that you're previewing. This makes absolutely no sense and just makes it even harder to find what you're looking for if you can't remember what channel it was in, or if you're trying to find a broad range of messages in different channels. I get that it was probably to make it more “convenient” but there's really no reason for this to be the case. It also contributes to the problem of mobile and desktop becoming two separate entities, which for a messaging app is very bad. This tweet lists a few more problems with the search that I didn't mention but thought people might be interested in seeing.
I've cancelled my Nitro subscription and, if you have a problem with the new mobile app, I suggest you do the same. Feedback and cutting their revenue is the best way we can signal to Discord that this is not what users want. This support forum exists for the sole reason of giving feedback so I really hope they take it seriously for the sake of their users.
