No this is one of the main reasons I prefer discord over skype and messenger, because it doesn't have a "message read" indicator. It is honestly a privacy issue and not everybody wants to contribute to conversations. This has done nothing but cause mistrust and judging on messenger for me and honestly I shouldn't have to feel forced to reply to everything that is sent to me. This cannot work under every circumstance.

Why do we have people in the comments downvoting people pointing out that this is a privacy issue?

For out guild, it's ridiculously hard ot work out who has seen stuff and not.  I have to ask them for a react which is about as effective as you can imagine.

Of course it could be a privacy issue but you could always handle it like apple handles the same feature in iMessage.  User chooses default behavior for all discussions with the option to manually enable in each DM.

Plus it would be off by default, if they do it right, you could give server admins the ability to turn it on for rooms/topics too.  Think of it like an auto react that just appears for each user on the message if they have read it.  the system is mostly in place for that - and of course, you would let users make decisions if they wanted to share that.  Read status i staple of nearly every other messaging/chat program

I completely agree with this! This is so useful so people don't leave you ghosted. Discord please notice this!

I exited other social media apps and chose Discord over them specifically because Discord doesn't have the annoying read/seen receipts. It's not just a breach of privacy; it's an unnecessary source of conflict and drama. I've seen several groups of people arguing and couples breaking up over someone not responding immediately even though they've seen the message, or pestering them irl about why they haven't looked at their messages yet.

Let's say it's optional and you can turn it off. Then there would be people bothering you about why you have it turned off and telling you to turn it on. Let's say you block them, but then you can't see what they've sent regardless of importance and in DMs they won't be able to send you anything at all. You shouldn't have to block someone just so they don't become obsessed with monitoring read/seen receipts.

If people don't reply to you right away, maybe they're taking time to figure out what to say, or if it's taking more than just a few hours, then you can message them again. If it's urgent, it's better to call. If they don't respond to you at all, then maybe you should take the hint and stop bothering them. I used to think this was common sense back when we didn't have seen/read receipts everywhere.

If you really need the feature for non-obsessive reasons, it might be better to suggest another version of Discord for businesses and the like. We don't need more paranoia/insecurity fuel.

"Away with you" -  Not having an optional system for read/seen receipts doesn't get rid of the negotiations that worry you so much.  I have an agreement with someone I communicate with  lot on discord to use a specific 'reaction" emoji as a read/seen indicator.  But it's a hassle to do this manually, so both of us often forget to do it - or are in too much of a rush to do it.  It would be much more effective to be able to turn on an automated system - by agreement.  My point is that the absence of this facility in discord doesn't end the need to negotiate over the issue but we are left without an efficient system to use if we agree to give each other read/seen signals..

Is this ever going to happen? this has long been a critical behavior that drives me away from using this with my friends exclusively. I would love to use this but it has been ages since people started asking this. WHEN??

NO, if they were to add it, then maybe in servers only, but in DMs, I would hate that it. It just goes against the 'privacy' aspect of messaging. All other programs that have that feature, I hate them. If discord did add that feature, then I'm never gonna send a dm again or look at them cuz, ew.

If they implemented an extremely common feature and then turned it off by default, everyone can be happy, yet people keep showing up in a feature request thread complaining that they hate read receipts so bad that it’s wrong to implement them. It’s called optional features, also this is discord. This is not texting, it’s not an open method, if you are so worried about someone knowing that you saw what they had to say, defriend them, stop talking to them?

Maybe a toggle on,off option to enable if users can know if I saw their messages or not, with a flag in the discussions to inform you : This person is disabling(enabling) the Seen feature

This is chat client 101... How is it still not an option 2yrs and several duplicated discussions later?

    Of course make it optional.

Just registered after holding off for years based on 3rd party complaints, yet everyone using it.

I have to say this is the most complicated, terribly functioning chat app I've ever seen.

Yo honestly, this would be great to have for groups or 1 on 1 DMs! It would really be great to see this and would most likely make other people in Discord happy!

Need read receipts for all, servers/DM's. Make it optional. Obviously large servers wouldn't work. But now we that the use is ever changing and a new focus to the wider community. Would be a great time to bring in. Get people out of the whatsapp's of the world. (Crappy app). Discord has a great feature set. Yet this is a big omission. Please hear a our cries

Would be amazing for DM options and can be customized or disabled for servers.

No because that is what I like about discord. Dont need some weirdo constantly dming me asking why I have not seen his message or "I know you read my DM! ANSWER ME!" Its stupid.

If it is added, it should be optional just like on whatsapp- This is the only safe way to communicate without feeling watched.

Are 857 upvotes not enough for discord to notice this?

I use Discord for my French association server and it would help the way we work so much!
Anyway, is there any way to set up a bot to do it right now?

I agree that this should work in DM's or Group Chats, but not directly in servers. This would be a great feature (especially for evidence purposes).

    Still waiting on it :/

  • jean_ravenclaw

Not only for DM's, but this would be great for community servers too to see how active people are and how many messages are left on 'seen zone'.

I myself am annoyed at how people ignore my messages - even though sometimes they aren't. A lot of people go on invisible and I need to know whether they have seen my message and didn't know what to say or just havent read it yet or anything.
