    from eXandric:
Discriminators are going to be come more common as the internet explodes. They are necessary to allow people to have similar names. With discriminators you have the ability to always have a username available to you because now the usernames are unique based on the words. 10,000 can now have the username ASDF if they really want.

    from Marco225:
The #XXXX is for you to be able to have the name you want and being capable to be repetead with another user, is like your dogtag. This #XXXX is just for finding the friend you want to add, when added, You will not see it anymore. So you are not poochyena#XXXX you are poochyena and the #XXXX is just to find you.

    from Raidox:
What poochyena suggests is not unreasonable for a company starting to build their system, but once this decision is made, it is harder than you think it is to change on a technical level and it gets even harder from a customer happiness point of view as your user base grows. That may not be what you want, but what Discord did was not a stupid decision.

    from fewscrewsmissing:
It's basically the single greatest feature I've ever seen. We can now have 34000 people with my username and it doesn't matter at all. If you can't comprehend the benefit, despite the umpteen attempts at explaining it, then... I don't know, go back to MSN?

    from EliFire:
Your discord tag isn't part of your username, even when you go to change it you can see it's separated, because it's 2 different things. So if your tag really is part of your username then it would show together with your username or display name, since they're the same thing, correct me if i'm wrong.

    from 💙Kurim OwO💙:
Well honestly it's not like it's a big deal, the four digits just show up when you go to someone's profile page, they have no effect on your account, just memorize the numbers or write them down. Honestly it cant be that hard, you have to memorize your phone number, that's like 10 digits, or how about a social security number, that's even more. If you cant remember 4 numbers how do you expect to know your social security?

literally the whole essay that kortooney typed.

plenty of people have stated why the current system is fine. you are just the most stubborn person on this platform and the only one with this issue.

    @kortooney

    >First name = username, last name = tag.

First name only is not an identification. A username is.

    >Yes, poochyena DOES identify you because that's you

if you searched discord for "poochyena", there will be multiple people with that name. if there are multiple people with the same name, its not an identifier.

    >your tag's your identity

if you searched discord for "1412", there will be multiple people with that tag. if there are multiple people with the same tag, its not an identifier.

    > in real life practicality use, you do know that if you make your username poochyena123123 or whatever, you'd have to memorize the numbers at the end as well, right?

yes, and thats ok, since its your choice to add random numbers at the end or not, and which numbers you pick and how long.

    >This all leads to the one thing others had told you: Discord Nitro. If you can't remember 4 randomly generated digits (how on earth do you remember your phone number?), than get discord nitro.

And the people I add who don't have nitro, and didn't even realize discord added a random tag when they created their account, like the multiple people I've met irl?

    @skel

Those where all people who think tag isn't part of your username for some reason.

    -12
  • skel

because your tag isnt your username. as many people have said, its a discriminator.

    10
  • kortooney

@skel referenced those people because they're right. Are you only gonna listen to people who think the tag is part of the username? Why not show your friends your logic, try to bring them 'round to your point of view, and then ask them? You did say you had friends. Bother them instead of us mentally sane people. Also, @skel, I feel honoured for my pointless essay to be recognized. Thank you.

the discriminator is part of your username. A username is your unique identifier.

what do you think a username is?

    -12
  • skel

a username is... your name. again even if i sound like a broken record, the tag is a DISCRIMINATOR. my username isnt skel#7007, its skel. just skel. the discriminator is *only* used for adding someone and determining them from other users. in DMs, in servers, in group chats, all youll see is skel, not skel#7007.

Okay, I just did my research, unlike you, and have found something interesting. A wikiHow article on how to add friends on discord specifically states: "Your friend's Discord Tag is their username followed by a "#" number sign and a unique, 4-digit code." So the tag is not part of the username. And, as I have repeated several times before, the definition of username is as states: " a sequence of characters that identifies a user when logging onto a computer or website". That's what I think a username is.

    7
  • poochyena

skel is your name. your name isn't a unique identifier, there could be hundreds of skel.

A username is a unique identifier. There is exactly ONE skel#7007. skel#7007 is what identifies you from the rest of discord users.

    >in DMs, in servers, in group chats, all youll see is skel, not skel#7007.

Thats because skel is your display name, not username.

exactly right, and thats why, for example, skel is not a username, because it does not identify someone. Its a name, not an identifier.

Okay, you seem to be stuck with your argument, so I'll stick you with this. Here's the article I was referring to: "https://www.wikihow.com/Add-Friends-on-Discord". Method 1, step 5 says "Your friend's Discord Tag is their username followed by a "#" number sign and a unique, 4-digit code.". I'm sure you must agree with reliable research, amirite? As I am saying nothing about your argument, you are now forced to consider my point. I will say nothing more about the issue and only refer you to this site.

yknow im just gonna stop. you are so goddamn stubborn i feel bad for anyone that deals with you irl. hopefully some other people can come to this thread and attempt to knock some sense into you. although seeing how this has gone, youre probably just gonna say "no lol" i might chime back in later but i got better stuff to do now. peace

Also, if poochyena#1414 or whatever is your username, shouldn't that be displayed above your chats as you type in this discussion? How come only poochyena, then? It's not your display name, because, looking back to my research, poochyena is your username.

  • poochyena

    @kortooney

    wikihow doesn't really mean anything....
if you want examples, click on your user settings and notice under where it says "username" it lists your name AND tag, together, under the title "username"

    >shouldn't that be displayed above your chats as you type in this discussion? How come only poochyena, then?

    Its my display name

    >It's not your display name, because, looking back to my research, poochyena is your username.

any name that is displayed in chats is your display name.

It’s four digits, if you have no problem remembering them as you say, then you can simply tell the other person your digits and name and they can add you. All you need to know is their name to accept and know it’s them because I doubt that you’ll have 2 of the same username add you in the same time frame of purposely having someone else with that username add you.

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a chronic condition in which a person demonstrates an excessive focus on details, order and rules, and the need to achieve a perfect outcome, often in a way that interferes with daily life. They can be stubborn, insisting that things must be done their way.

    Peace out

    Discord is awesome.
Don't bother trying to straight something that can't be straighten.

How about just write it down on your phone?

Or just give them a different social media, then tell them on there.

On Discord, the Username is your Display name. You can change your 'name' on servers, but that is only a nickname for you. For someone to add you without being on the same server, they would need to put in your Username. Which may be the same as other people's username, so the person may be confused who's, who. At that point i usually then just message the extra numbers to them as normally the numbers on their own get them to my profile. You say you want to make up your own numbers at the end, and have that for the entire site. To be honest that seems pretty selfish, companies use discord in a formal way and they may find it quite annoying when they're looking along the list and see someone called; Tom132456436. You could say that one should just change their nickname on that server, but doing it for every server they join seems a bit tedious. Seeing as there's going to be quite a few people wanting to be called Tom. I also have a feeling the tags probably make it easier for the discord to customize everything and link accounts. I don't understand how an extra few, practically invisible numbers have affected your opinion on discord.
Bit late, but after reading this i just had to.

Well they could've add a system that we could find differences on photos or profile notes, memos or somethings. Like in Steam or something else you know.

Yo idk how or why I read this thread but holy shit. I’m about to change my name to poochyena

    4
  • Zeek

Melih, finding someone’s stream is a horrendous process. So that’s why they have so many ways to find someone’s profile (links, friend link number codes, clicking a profile to add them, etc.)

  • Zeek

Also it’s been 6 months since OP and they still couldn’t remember 4 numbers out of stubbornness. It’s essentially saying your name is Adam Smith and then your discriminator is your socials security number. So good luck remembering that. Also another thing, how have you had so much struggle adding these friends when you can simply open your discord APP ON YOUR PHONE BECAUSE WHEREVER YOU HAVE INTERNET you have ACCESS TO DISCORD AND SHOW THEM YOUR NUMBERS POOCHYENA. STOP CAUSING PROBLEMS AND REALIZE You. DONT HAVE TO REMEMBER YOUR NUMBERS AND JUST SHOW THEM TO PEOPLE WHEN YOU ADD SOMEONE AND THEN BANG WHAT DO YOU KNOW YOU SHOW SOMEONE A FEW TIMES AND YOU MEMORIZED YOUR NUMBERS. WOW

i gotta complain because a friend of mine who i only could talk by discord was robbed and created a new discord account, but using the one i still had on my DM's she only told me her username and stopped using it. so now i cant talk to her because i dont know her discriminant, and even then im not arguing with people because of that, im adding as my friend username#0001 username#0002 until i find her and even having a reason to get mad im just trying to have my friend back

    0
  • Calamity

Why? Because I can't remember than random 4 digit code at the end.

No other social media does this, and it makes adding people extremely difficult. There isn't even a reason for it that I can think of.

    that's your problem lol

Discord makes it so that multiple users could share the same username, but you would still be able to differentiate each person.

For example, you can have about 1,000 people with the name, asdf.

And, have you ever experienced having to choose a new name when making a new account because your name choice was already taken? With discord, you can have the same name as a friend or something.

Write your tag down somewhere if you don't want to memorize it. When first joining discord, I put my tag and username on my phone and overtime, I got used to it.

If you want to customize it, get a nitro subscription, or stick to skype if that's still your thing.
