Get rid of the four digit tag numbers at the end of usernames
This is so frustrating and the reason I took so long to join discord. The useless random numbers at the end of usernames.
When someone irl asks me for my social media, I tell them everything except for discord. Why? Because I can't remember than random 4 digit code at the end. The exact same thing happens when I ask other people. It has happened at least twice, I asked for their username and they just give me their username, not the last 4 digits, since they didn't choose the numbers, and thus, don't remember (or even know its a thing).
No other social media does this, and it makes adding people extremely difficult. There isn't even a reason for it that I can think of.
-
Imagine camping a thread that you made 4 years ago as much as it's been widely negatively perceived and coming off as completely snarky in your replies while making absolutely no sense at all.

poochyena
you're definitely going to end up complaining that you have to add numbers to your username because someone grabbed it first, and then "poochyena1" will end up being taken, and so on with adding numbers to it. So in the end, you'll end up having to put a bunch of random numbers, and you'll still complain you can't remember them, so I don't understand why you would complain about 4 numbers, when you're going to now complain about it having it to be more than 4 simple numbers. So you might as well add numbers to your username on here, and every other platform, because in the end, you'll realize how much easier it was BEFORE they made it like every other social media platform there is, except discord isn't supposed to be like every other social media platform. So good luck!4 -
I'll be able to pick the numbers, so I don't see the issue there. Its not hard to remember numbers I picked myself.
Can you explain why you think a set of random 4 digit numbers is better than being able to pick your own number of any length?-8 -
wait, so you complain about having the numbers, but don't complain that you'll have to add more numbers to it? Or even possibly words?
3 -
please, tell me how that makes sense, because I would LOVE to know
4 -
The complaint is about being forced to have random numbers. I am ok with being able to choose my own username. I am not ok with having numbers added to the end that I didn't choose.-9
-
the numbers really aren't hard to remember, i remember mine quiet easily
4 -
Can you explain why its better you were given a set of random 4 digit numbers at the end of your username rather than being able to pick your own numbers?
-7 -
I wouldn't be able to come up with numbers
the one time i was gifted nitro, i changed it to the last 4 digits of my number (i know, stupid, but i said "why not, it's funny") but when it ran out, the numbers i had changed, but i lived with it, i had to change my ads with it, but it wasnt that big of a difference. i even asked discord if there was a way to change it back. people get attached to the discriminator they were given, or at least i did, and still do3 -
also, i wouldn't even be able to add the number 4083 to the end of my username because there won't be enough room to add it, so don't even suggest it

Y'all should just read Discord's motivation for doing this: https://discord.com/blog/usernames
They have data that supports what I and others have been saying in this thread: that discriminators are a source of confusion for a large portion of the Discord user base. People don't understand them. They forget them. They mix the digits up. 1224 becomes 1242. Or maybe it was 1424? This is consistent with what we've known about humans for a long time. We are not great with numbers.
Discord would not be doing this otherwise. In their blog post, they write:
We spoke with a lot of you about how you add one another as friends and crunched some numbers. It turns out that:
More than 40% of you either don’t remember your discriminator or don’t even know what a discriminator is. That’s a big problem when discriminators are required to add a new friend.
Across Discord, almost half of all friend requests fail to connect the user with the person they wanted to match with, mostly because users enter an incorrect or invalid username due to a combination of missing discriminator and incorrect casing.
Straight from the horse's mouth.
If you want digits, you can still have digits. In fact, you can almost certainly have your current username + discriminator if you so wish, because it is very unlikely someone else is going to want to pick that combination.
If you're like me and you don't want to have to deal with digits, you no longer have to.
-9 -
Ask yourself this question: Would you rather...
A. Put up with the randomised four digit discriminator that you can't for the life of you remember 90% of the time, which actually serves a security purpose not just for your account but also your personal safety, and have whatever wild username you so wish [also believe it or not, discriminators are not actually a part of your username; how you fail to understand this is beyond me]?
or
B. Put up with constant harassment and hacking/phishing attacks on your account just because you were forced to choose a very specific name and someone with the technical know-how wants your specific username for whatever reasons they have -- or even no reason at all -- and is willing to go to any lengths to get it from you, even if it results in you being actually physically harmed over it [and before you ask, yes, people have actually been physically harmed over incidents like this -- some have even been killed]?
TL;DR version of the question: Would you rather have to deal with four random numbers or deal with being in constant real life danger?
Put another way: Do you really want to give up your personal safety just to get rid of four numbers?I'd think long and hard about this if I were you. Personally, my choice is pretty clear. If you would still rather have the latter, then all I can tell you is be careful what you wish for

The problem is, discord uses random post from reddit as a source, and this post wasn't about people not knowing what a discriminator is. The post was just asking what are those numbers called, showing a screenshot of a discriminator. Some people didn't know what was the name of it, but they still knew what that number was and were able to use it.
Also, if it comes to remembering your discriminator and not typing it correctly - there's a "copy" button for a reason, right?
5 -
Tali Are you suggesting Discord hasn't carefully examined the data it has before making a decision that fundamentally affects its platform and will require a sizeable man time investment to implement?
Also, if it comes to remembering your discriminator and not typing it correctly - there's a "copy" button for a reason, right?
Again, look at the data Discord is presenting us with. This is not the kind of problem you solve by pointing people towards a button. That button is there for convenience.
At this point, I'm unsubscribing from this topic. There's nothing left to discuss. Discord has decided that the system requested by poochyena is conducive to a better user experience than its current system. I agree. I understand that the downvoters in this thread do not.
Be well, everyone.

There is a copy button

It’s honestly kind of stupid that this is still going on after 4 years

and plus, id rather have my username as Icey Ash, Water Stew & Water Sam rather then iceyashwaterstewwatersam4083 cause at that point, i might as well just put that as my display name too, when i dont want that, i like it with the spaces and the comma and the "&"
and oh, in case you didn't notice, I DIDN'T INCLUDE the discriminator, BECAUSE ITS NOT PART OF THE NAME. its there so for the many different Icey Ash's that there are, I can be one of them, along with another one who spells it the SAME WAY3 -
"discriminators are not actually a part of your username"A username is unique. Your name without the discriminator is not unique. If someone is harassing you, you can block them or change your username. This is true for the old and new system. If two people wanted Sgt_Leppard#0001 then they would both have to fight for it.I have real world experience of multiple people giving not giving me their random 4 digit number when I ask them for their username, and them having trouble locating it since they were new to discord and not good with computers. When you type in your username, but given an alternate username, it confuses people. That isn't up for debate, its the reality. It posses absolutely ZERO benefit to the user.-6
-
i dont really understand why this is still going on after 4 years, like, just deal with it or don't use discord? it's not that hard, if you want to give people your discord, write it down, i dont give it out, mainly because nobody i talk to uses it that much, most people give out their number or use snapchat
3 -
I'm here to improve discord, not make excuses for their bad decisions. I'm not a fanboy. The discriminator adds no benefit to the user. Allowing users to add their own numbers to the end of their username is objectively a better user experience.
-6 -
How is this still going on? this whole post has to have been a troll cuz I've been getting email's about this for 3 years at this point

The complaint is about being forced to have random numbers. I am ok with being able to choose my own username. I am not ok with having numbers added to the end that I didn't choose.
You're literally complaining about having random forced numbers onto your name.
If you really don't like that, then how about you pay for a Nitro subscription for the numbers that you want? Just like the people do that have this same glaring issue that's personal to them?
If you think that you shouldn't need to pay for such a premium, then there are methods of rerolling your discriminator entirely for free. Sure, it takes time and you would need to get lucky with it, but time is money.
Don't like it? Then pay. It's literally that simple.
I'm here to improve discord, not make excuses for their bad decisions. I'm not a fanboy. The discriminator adds no benefit to the user. Allowing users to add their own numbers to the end of their username is objectively a better user experience.
Just stop.
You're not improving anything here. You're only making it worse and it should be blatant than ever that you are.
Literally read what you're saying and what's coming out of your own mouth. You're not taking into consideration the community at all and thinking about that and how such a change will affect the platform as a whole. Your opinions are far from being what's more factual and what the majority of the community is agreeing and siding with. It's completely valid concerns and criticism that is being brought up and discussed, and you're so oblivious by what's going on since all you really care about is yourself and what you want.
It's not what everyone else wants, it's far from it.

If you really don't like that, then how about you pay for a Nitro subscription for the numbers that you want?I would not be able to choose the number I want, as I want a 1, 2, or 3 digit number, not a 4 digit number. How would I be negatively affected if I could reduce the number of number digits on my username? You're only making it worse and it should be blatant than ever that you are.Tell me how it makes things worse. Why is it better I a given a random 4 digit number than for me to choose my own number of any length? I don't want to hear excuses, I want to hear why the random numbers is a better system.-6

Are you like okay in the head, like actually? The discriminators aren't "numbers" at the end of the name like a typical handle or username in other platforms. You're not "@poochyena3333" or something for example, you're "poochyena" with an identifying number of #3333... that's how people search for your name, and how people search for others too. when everyone has those "numbers" they seem to disappear. They don't exist outside of just searching for someone, or for aesthetic.
As Ephenia had said, if you don't like it then pay for it. If you're too broke just say it.
You literally cannot "create the name you want" because the name you want is likely going to be taken with the new system anyway... and if you do then you're a target for harassment, swatting, hacking, scamming, etc.
This new system is flawed in its entirety, and if at any time it should have been put into affect, it should have been when Discord first launched. The Discriminator system was created to avoid the common issues that other platforms had with @ handles.
If you can't understand that then I'm sorry, I don't know what to tell you.4 -
How would I be negatively affected if I could reduce the number of number digits on my username?
The real question is, how are you that negatively affected by 4 digits at the end of your name?
Even a phone number is longer than 4 digits, yet you're complaining about a measly 4 digits.
It's all about you here, and the problem is you. You don't see people complaining about phone numbers and wanting them shorter, do you?
Tell me how it makes things worse.
This thread that you made here and its existence is what is making it worse enough as is. You continuing to respond on it isn't helping the situation going on now in time. People are very upset and are just going to eat things up even more as you continue to chalk things up.
Why is it better I a given a random 4 digit number than for me to choose my own number of any length? I don't want to hear excuses, I want to hear why the random numbers is a better system.
I am not going to reiterate here to you and go over why it's better. There's other threads here and mainly over on Discord's subreddit where you can get much better insight if you're caring to be more well informed. There shouldn't be any excuses to being oblivious to not even knowing a few reasons as to why the "new" system is worse than the one that we have currently.
Remember, it's the community that matters abroad mostly. Not just you.

You're not "@poochyena3333" or something for example, you're "poochyena" with an identifying number of #3333
There is no effective difference between poochyena3333 and poochyena#3333
that's how people search for your name, and how people search for others too. when everyone has those "numbers" they seem to disappear. They don't exist outside of just searching for someone, or for aesthetic.
That is true for the new system too. If my username was poochyena3333, no one would see those number outside of searching my name, since my display name would just be poochyena.
You literally cannot "create the name you want" because the name you want is likely going to be taken with the new system anyway... and if you do then you're a target for harassment, swatting, hacking, scamming, etc.
This is also true for the old system. If I wanted poochyena#0001, but someone already took it, I'd have to pick a different name.

The real question is, how are you that negatively affected by 4 digits at the end of your name?Answer my question first. The question is why is it better. If you can not answer that, then you are just a fanboy making excuses. You don't see people complaining about phone numbers and wanting them shorter, do you?Yes, phone numbers are a terribly outdated system. I can't even tell you the last time I used a phone number for non-business reasons.-4

Answer my question first. The question is why is it better. If you can not answer that, then you are just a fanboy making excuses.
Great for you to assume gender by calling me a "fanboy" as an insult.
I can tell that you're really not the sharpest pencil in the box.
Yes, phone numbers are a terribly outdated system. I can't even tell you the last time I used a phone number for non-business reasons.
Age must be a dated system to you as well.
It appears that you really went back to using a single digit for your age.
Congratulations.

There is no effective difference between poochyena3333 and poochyena#3333
There is a difference between the two. Again, @poochyena3333 is a name on its own, but "poochyena" is your current name, #3333 is just a set of numbers people use to find you. they're not what makes you "poochyena", and they don't make you "poochyena3333". your username is poochyena... there's a difference. like I genuinely want to question your intelligence is if you can't understand this.no one would see those number outside of searching my name, since my display name would just be poochyena.
plain wrong. they'll see them on your profile and it won't be greyed out like the current set of numbers are. it'll all be in bold and it'll be "@poochyena3333" when they click on your profile.
This is also true for the old system. If I wanted poochyena#0001, but someone already took it, I'd have to pick a different name.
So this whole thread is you malding and coping for FOUR YEARS over the fact that you can't get #0001? mfw... there's still 9998 other tags you can grab to keep the name poochyena, unlike with @handles you would HAVE to put numbers in your username itself if you're not lucky. You're not poochyena3333#3333. You're poochyena(#3333)

poochyena Given that you're so tunnel-visioned on numbers, you must clearly not care about your personal safety or the safety and security of your account since you didn't bother sparing a single word about it. Do you want to be harassed nonstop and have people constantly hacking your account? Do you want desperate and dangerous people finding you and stalking you -- or worse?
Do you really not care about your safety that much? Cos if so, that is incredibly concerning, plain sad, and you need help
