Bot Developer Badge & New Restrictions TURNAROUND
Non pianificatoAs many of you are aware, there have been recent announcements regarding the verified bot developer badge and its recent change. The change outlines how the "Verified Bot Developer" badge is being changed to "Early Verified Developer", and will NOT be given to those who verify their bots in the future.
Many people, including me who have been working hard on their bots, and putting lots of thought and time and effort into the bot have been affected by these changes as well as those who have been planning to work hard on bots.
In the statement, there were outlined fraudulent requests and apparently this is one of the factors why this change has been made. My question, and the question that has been raised by so many people is, just because other people have been trying to fraudulently get this badge, why effect the others?
Many believe that the badge is the ONLY MOTIVATION to making bots in Discord, as your profile is the way to show of badges, and as I outlined earlier, there have been many people including myself who have been putting lots of time and thought into their bot and are just days away to publicly releasing them.
I think, and others think that the amount of Discord Bots being created will decline rapidly as people lose motivation, so please bring the badge, AT LEAST until October 7th or for a few more weeks, as I know that Discord are trying to increase their community engagement, but this is a BAD move - you've been doing it well and giving us deadlines and telling us when things are happening such as the 2nd October, but we needed a date or warning about this as there are still many willing developers working hard out there who have missed out due to this unfortunate change.
All I, and members of the Discord Developers and the Bot Developing community on Discord ask for is to turnaround this change, and give us some warning - maybe a few weeks or until October 7th, and a little warning and transparency would be nice in the future.

We don't have any plans to revive the verified developer profile badge. Remember, if your bot is verified, it still receives a special checkmark next to its BOT label in Discord so that users know it's a verified bot, so don't forget that folks will still see your bot's verified status!

I worked so much on my bot. The badge was one of my motivations but now it's gone. I submitted my bot on top.gg one month ago and it is goind to be verified today i guess. So close to have it. I'm devastated

Exactly, its the only motivation there is and disgraceful that they have done this.

Honestly some transparency would’ve actually been nice. Wouldn’t be surprised that if they stick with this, apps will fall lol
Good idea Roo, let’s hope we hear about it!

I completely agree with you, there are a lot of bot developers who are making bots for Discord and the badge is giving them the motivation to do so. Just because there are malicious users trying to abuse the system doesn't mean that they should stop giving the badge and ruin the motivation for other users. They could've announced it a week or so before changing it to this, I get it, there would be a lot of people rushing to apply but at least it would be transparent. There are a lot of bad actors making videos on YouTube telling users on how to make fake servers and invite the bot to it, why doesn't Discord make it so if the bot is being added to guilds that have a lot of bots in the server and the ratio between the bots and the users in that guild? Discord currently does check for server owner but doesn't check for the member count, they'd probably get a lot less bad actors if they check for guild members too. I started working on the base of my Discord bot in late 2019, the whole client was mostly done, at that time there were only about 15 commands, I stopped working on it because I didn't get motivation to do so and because I was busy too. In late March, I started working on more commands and rewrote the client a bit, then the badge was released a few days later. That gave me motivated to work on the bot a lot more and make it better, I worked on about 350+ commands in the span of 4 months, the bot was just realized in July. Yesterday, the bot reached the guilds required to verify and I was going to verify the bot today but then I saw the announcement in DDevs.

I started working on my Discord bot which will (hopefully) be public in the near future. The creation started early this year, and the badge has always been one of my main motivations, one of my others being to make the best bot I can, so the users which use it receive the best experience possible. And, although I will continue working on my bot, it is unfortunate that I can no longer receive the badge in return for my hard work which is going towards the community - at no cost.
Yes, there are people with fraudulent bots which get the badge. Within the application period, it could possibly be extended so Discord can run more checks and have more knowledge in regards to if the bot is fraudulent or not. One of my main points within this reply, is that there are still people that deserve the badge - there always will be.

Not long ago, when I received a DM and was about to certify, I realized that the only means of authentication was my driver's license, resident registration card, and passport. So I was waiting for my passport to be issued. But this happened.

I've been putting my heart and soul into making my bot, probably already spent over 100 hours into developing it.
Getting the badge was a big motivation (Though obviously not the only one) to do this. My bot is currently in 25 servers and is close to getting verified in 4 bot list websites. If this change would have been made like a week or 2 later I'd still have gotten the badge.
Also if I had been advertising more (Which I don't like doing) then I probably would have gotten it too, all I needed was some more servers.
I just wish they'd have announced it sooner or extend the date until October 7th.
It almost feels like an elementary school mindset where they say: "So a few people haven't been behaving well, so now everyone is getting a punishment".Again I know that its not the only motivation and it shouldn't be, but it makes people like me feel completely left out.
I see people saying the badge is just for looking cool and it shouldn't be any source of motivation for anyone but I think that's not right. If I want to make a custom bot for someone, it would help a lot if I can show that I am indeed a verified developer just by showing my profile.14 -
webtax Yes I know, but that will limit it to a few people (I am still going to be working on my bot), but the amount of Developers out there working on bots will decline and there are many people who are/were working on really decent bots, but have missed out on the chance. Also, Discord want to give the community some transparency, and this is NOT the way to do it - they should have put a week deadline on it and/or given us at least a weeks notice. There are many really good developers who are annoyed out there, and why should the actions of some ruin it for others?

The 100+ Hours I spent coding my bot...
It is quite unfair how a sudden announcement changes something effective immediately. When I first heard about the developer badge, I immediately attempted to learn a coding language. I learned C# (discord.net). It became the most time consuming thing in my life. When I had learned enough to get started, I did. I spent hours every day coding my bot and getting it on new servers. I told all of my friends and before I knew it I was at 75. I submitted the verification application as soon as I was able only to find out a couple days later, the badge was no longer available.
My email to Discord
"On August 20th, I submitted my Discord Developer Bot application. That same day, I had gotten my bot on 75 servers. I fit all of the requirements I read online, I spent 2 months working on this bot dedicating 100+ hours to making and improving the bot only to find out that there was an announcements saying...
"So, as of today--August 19, 2020--we are changing the “Verified Bot Developer” profile badge to the “Early Verified Developer” badge, and will not be granting it to anyone who submits for approval after today. If you have already submitted your application, you will still receive the badge."
I immediately checked to see what day I submitted the application and I was one day late. This announcement was sudden and unexpected. I thought I had until October 6th. That is what I was told. I have been using discord for a couple years and I have tried and tried to collect more badges. First, I tried the bug hunter, then the partner and now this one. I learned my first coding language and spent months, coding the bot, setting up a website and even a database.
I spent money to host the bot every month and buy a domain for the website. I worked so hard mostly to receive the badge.
Please, Discord, tell me there is a way to get this badge. I missed it by one day. The day before, the bot was on 70 servers, and on the 20th, I reached 75.
I know the bot will still have the check mark next to it but please, allow me to get the developer badge. I worked so hard for it."____________________________________________________________________________________________
Obviously this email was not read... I received a response saying exactly what the announcement had said.
This situation is really unfair to Discords valued users. Thousands of people legitimately coded a bot and looked forward to receiving this badge and discord removes it in an instant thinking it means nothing to their users.
I have been using discord for years and have probably spent 1000+ hours using it and I have paid for nitro ever since the beginning. I will likely cancel my nitro subscription and move on from discord. I know it's just a badge, but this legit hurt my mental health. I stayed up till' 3am some nights advertising and working on my bot. Once I submitted my application, I could not sleep... I was so exited to get the badge... but no, not anymore.
I believe I am a valued discord customer, I have probably spent over $300 for my nitro subscription and gifts for others and for them to do this is really unfair.
I have probably spent more time on discord than I have playing any video game. It is probably the thing I do most...13 -
👍 Nice post! i like it..
12 -
Both my bots are verified but I will have to say, a few days or a week worth of notice would've been appreciated. Or at the very least until the October deadline. There are so many people who're in distraught by this prompt decision. I would appreciate it if the team would allow the fellow developers a few more days.
11 -
I agree. The badge should be brought back. If I may add on to this post: if Discord detects that there is a fraudulent submission, the badge will not be awarded to that person.
11 -
Whats the point of having the checkmark then? If Discord is tired of dealing with fraudulent applications, why remove the only one of the perks? Shouldn't they remove all of them? What if someone makes a bot just to get the checkmark next to it? Makes no sense why they would suddenly remove the badge with no warning.
The people that just spent 100+ hours making a bot should at least be rewarded with the badge... I mean, it's not the end of the world but like... it was a stupid decision just to remove it out of no where. It was the last thing I expected.
My suggestion: Silently return the badge meaning, give the legitimate developers the badge for all before a certain date. Don't just remove it out of no where. I submitted my application on the 20th uninformed of the removal until a couple days later.

I agree, Discord should either remove the badge completely or bring it back.
Speaking from a person's perspective (myself), who has the Early Verified Bot Developer Badge, yes it seems cool to have a badge, it actually makes you stand out from other users & has the ability for you to be recognised that you are an authentic bot developer. HOWEVER, the fact Discord has removed the ability for you to get the badge now, and renamed it as Early Verified Developer, is completely unfair. Discord should bring back the badge, however they should make the expectations higher, so fraudulent applications can be avoided.
The badge was designed to recognise you as an authentic developer, but Discord Verification isn't about the badge, it is about creating a useful bot for your users, and representing it as authentic. I also agree with everyone, for the fairness for every bot developer out there in the Discord Community, to remove the badge completely, OR make the requirements more strict so only more older, popular & authentic bots can be verified, and receive less fraudulent applications. That way, true developers & authentic bot owners can be verified, meaning the people who have spent countless hours & unbelievable amounts of money on hosting, & buying things like domains can have that "medal", "achievement" and "recognition" they deserve.I am disappointed in Discord for this change, and filled with anger of the people who went to extreme levels just for the badge, I think discord should EITHER remove it completely and give your bot the checkmark only, OR bring it back and make the expectations higher. Now the badge is worthless & it's treated like an "Early Supporter" badge...
It sounds almost as if you got "unverified" or you were "once" verified by naming it Early, the whole point of the badge in my eyes is to recognise ACTIVE bot developers by calling it "Verified Bot Developer".The fact that Discord did nothing to compensate to users who cannot even get the badge anymore and worked SO HARD for their bot's verification is even more disappointing.
Discord is a great platform for chatting & sharing our cool bot projects. This change was disappointing, Discord, please step up your game.9 -
Yeah discord really need to change that, that's one of the biggest motivation

I rather have everyone being able to obtain a badge or completely revoking it off people's profile. It doesn't sound fair that the people who forced themselves to get these badges under conditions where they are not really deemed to be proper developers, but are now unique compared to the upcoming developers who worked damn hard to learn, to be inspired and to create a bot and to keep the sustained and constant effort for the past few months. It's obvious that this change will affect both parties (Users and Discord) and I completely understand Discord's take upon this but honestly, keeping the badge is a no-no.8 -

I'm absolutely agree with youMy bot was ready to use the form for the verified bot and i was doing the form, but seems that my passport have expired and that's the only way i was able to verify myself. I contacted the support and they said to wait until you will get a new card for verify your identity, and this happened.

I just finished my bot today, and then I saw the news and I feel unmotivated. I think they should give the badge to people who make the bots, if they're doing it just for the badge, well they went through the effort of coding then they deserve the badge. There must be a way for them to check if a blank bot was paid to put into a bunch of fake servers. I also completely agree with Sammy.

I understand that there might be a number of people who're doing this just by copy-pasting or watching tutorials but there are also many people who had just met the requirements like a few hours before this update.
I am not saying I'm against Discord, it's always nice to have things like these become more exclusive and only be given to people who have actually worked their months and years into creating their bots. I see both sides and I agree with both sides, my only point was this could've been handled a tiny bit slower than how it happened by changing it within a couple of hours of the notice.
I love Discord, it has truly changed my life and I respect the team's decision. Peace everyone, keep working hard, if you enjoy your craft, a badge shouldn't stop you from working harder.

I will have to agree. It is nice to have an "Early" Verified Bot Developer badge, because it makes people feel very special to be one of the early ones. This announcement was given without any warning yesterday. However, many people including me haven't had the chance to get our bots verified yet. It makes us feel left out :(
I love Discord a lot and I hope to see this changed in the future.

It was very disappointing to read this news. I hope that at least until October 7th we laugh at the possibility of getting it. It is really unfair that some users have received it and others have not, despite the immense work done by the developers convinced they will get it. I have faith in Discord and I really hope they come back.

I am devastated to learn the news by chance ... Such a beautiful project developed for months, a great recognition to the key, and ... Very very sad.

I think need to give at least DM and e-mail recipients a chance.
Because DM contains the contents of the badge.5 -
@jay.
I agree. I've been wanting to code a small economy Discord Bot for a while now, but I always put it off to try other coding projects. But when I heard about the Verified Bot & Dev program on Discord, I came back to building my bot, in hopes that my efforts might actually be rewarded. I code to get credit and recognition from others, not to waste money on hosting and a domain each month and a butt load of time, just to then beg the users of my bot to "follow my patreon" to sustain the bot. No, all I wanted was to get the badge so people know I'm for real when I talk about code, not some newbie kid who wants to look cool, who, believe you me, I've met a lot on Discord and they didn't know jack-diddly-squat and weren't as involved in code as I am either.
Either way, I started working a lot more on my bot recently, wanting to finish it, get it out there and get it verified, so then people can see that I'm not some dreamer, that I have goals in my coding career, and that I achieve them, and now they just get stomped out because some people sent fraudulent reqs for the badge? This pisses me off.
I get that Discord has a lot on their hands, and that dealing with fakes takes a lot of time, but come on. I think they shouldn't actually take it away 100%, no, that makes me feel like Discord is a preschool classroom, and a few kids did something bad on the playground so now no one can go there. Rather than that, I'd want it to be based on a referral system, that if the bot is used and requested a lot, as in the bot is always seen to be active and the users are using it, too, then the bot dev is legit and not just making some random bot for all their friends to add.
The checkmark on the bot can be given whenever since barely anyone cares if a bot is verified or not, but the badge should be given to the developer when he proves to be actively changing the bot and actually invested in coding, not badge hunting.
Either way, I guess this is the end of it, since Rabbit Tank responded saying "they have no plans to bring it back, ever", which is their way of putting "it's gone and we don't care about your opinion" lightly. Seems like they don't care about their customers as much as we thought they did. Sad.
And for those who think I'm not a dedicated Discord user, I've had Nitro for almost 2 years now (started 6 days after they stopped giving the "early supporter badge" which made me even more mad) and I'm on Discord CONSTANTLY. It's the only messaging app I use. Don't have snapchat, don't use TS, haven't used Skype in millennia, so seeing them do this to everyone is a huge blow.

AdminAtShmalle.xyz I have no idea what your argument there was but ok.
Point is, whether it's cool or not, it was a symbol. HypeSquad Events badge, Bug Catcher badge, these are all badges that anyone could get easily, and it was even easier to badge hunt these badges, yet people complain about Bot Dev Badge being huntable and cool and idfc what else.My point being that the Dev Badge was something different. Unlike events or bug catcher, it actually showed that you did something and you're not some dumb ass that spends his whole day staning Discord, no. It was a way to show others, or people at an interview, or when you're applying for a small project, that you know your shit in coding. Instead of changing the requirements to actually make sense though (rather than 75 servers, have the bot be used all the time and have actual code in it would be better) they made the horrible decision to take it out. I bet you Discord wasn't even checking if the bot was online, they just checked the guild count then gave the badge.
5 -
Please bring that badge back!
5 -
Agreed Hqrion, I spent like 15 dollars in total on hosting. Just about to hit the magic number and then they do this :(
5 -
I can see both ways like it would’ve been nice if they gave like a week notice but I don't think they'd likely revert it now since they've changed it and it makes it more special for those that have it currently. Also, if you were Mason and saw this would you not be less likely to revert it since it just proves more that people were mainly doing it for the badge?
