Closing the app doesn't stop notifications

I just downloaded the discord app for a group a am a member of. It was constantly beeping because of notifications coming in, which was expected. However, when I closed the app the beeping didn't stop. I reopened the app and turned off notifications. That didn't help. I then turned off the sound for new messages and that worked. I don't want to have to turn notifications on and off every time I use the app.

When I close an app I expect it to be closed, gone, not running. With Slack, Google Chat, Skype, etc. if the app is closed then it is gone from my machine, not running in the background annoying me.
