Sub Categories

I personally feel like this might be a little to complicated and will create a complicated interface people don't need. I wish you luck with your suggestion!

I can imagine this being used like the example above allowing to group all private team rooms. My server has them all hidden unless you are a part of the team, but there are definitely cases where this could be useful.16 -
There's another post requesting this, from 2 years ago, with 60 upvotes, marked as duplicated and linking to this post also requesting this, also from 2 years ago, with 100 upvotes, also marked as duplicate and linking to a non-existent post...
Why is this not a thing? And has there ever been an official statement whether this has been rejected or is planned?

I need this too. Can we please get a official statement about Sub-Categories?

so strange this isn't already a feature

This NEEDS to be a feature. This would help so much to make everything more organized and compact. My Server is just at the beginning, but it already has to much in it. I made that people need to choose roles for specific categories they are interested in, however this solution won't last forever, especially when I expand the categories further in the future.
Discord needs this!!

I already commented on a similar post from forever ago but seriously this needs to happen! An official statement would be nice if its going to happen or not...

Like DigitalAddict said, this NEEDS to happen. I run a community gaming server, about to transition into a new version of that server with 4 other community owners and using my original server as a template. Problem is, my server looks quite messy due to the sheer amount of games that it covers, and there is always going to be more added as time goes on. Having sub-categories could make everything much better organised and much less chaotic to look at for any end user who plays a lot of games.

This definitely NEEDS to happen. Servers I am in is SUPER packed and subcategories would keep things looking nice, clean and organized. While locking certain things behind specific roles can help, when people have almost all, if not all of them, then it just gets really cramped and makes it a big eyesore. Can we PLEASE make this happen like... Yesterday?

This will allow for so much organization when making a server that has more than one topic going one for example gaming channels to share with various players and play styles.

This seems to be a pretty good idea all around, if implemented properly it would provide an extra level of organization that large servers desperately need.
3 -
This is indeed something we need as well. As we start to grow and have more channels we really need a way to organise this in "sub categories" or whatever you call it

Do This!
I have a server that runs GDKP's on WoW Classic and currently im using a bot to hide categories because theres too many channels currently.
Just the raid signup channels currently look like this:
With this i could have it organized like this:
Sunday
-Raid
--Raid Signup
--Raid Chat
--Raid Voice
Monday
-Raid
--Raid Signup
--Raid Chat
--Raid Voice
Tues
-Raid
--Raid Signup
--Raid Chat
--Raid Voice
Wed
-Raid
--Raid Signup
--Raid Chat
--Raid Voice
Thur
-Raid
--Raid Signup
--Raid Chat
--Raid Voice
Fri
-Raid
--Raid Signup
--Raid Chat
--Raid Voice
Sat
-Raid
--Raid Signup
--Raid Chat
--Raid Voice
With each day being collapsible and mutable instead of having to have each section hidden with a bot3 -
I create categories and a voice channel nobody can join for a workaround for this. it looks like garbage but it does work if the user knows how to use discord and collapses the channels to keep it looking clean. (notice the locked VC with the arrow, irrelevant but needs to be there for the user to be able to see the category name) it would be nice to be able to collapse them tho...

I have been waiting for this for a good while, I really hope it gets implemented before mid summer when we hold an online event. Hope dies last

Another update with no sub catagories... will it ever happen?
1 -
man, I hope this becomes a thing. I know I could use this not because it's good on a server members screen but for me, I have some channels for admins that have to do with bots (and having the tile owner) I see all of it and I wish I could put into a subcategory so I don't need it in a separate category for the same ruleset.
I would have the second category be in the first so admins can still use the text and voice without having to look at the bot stuff.

This will make things a lot easier and even more dynamic while looking for a channel. Sad there is no information about it happening.

I run an iracing league and this would be amazing. Setting up series schedules with a separate text channel and then on top of that having a separate results text channel for each series gets congested as all get out. If I had sub categories I could contain all of that information within one category having two subcategories within, looking so much cleaner. No need to scroll through all the categories to get to what you need, just open the sub category and its there.

It will be great then I would be able to run my whole school of discord

As time goes by the if u stay on a server, the use is going to become more specific. We need to be able to branch existing channels/categories into deeper subcategories and channels.
Like if I have a science category and have text channels in it named bio, chemistry, or physics. I would like to keep branching deeper where some are subcategory channels are designed to post links and another for discussions.
Like ChrisCotton has it spot on with the raid schedule alone.
Having them being categories by itself means we cannot compact them outside of use which makes the category interface wayyyy to long.

I agree. This is just stupid to not even answer why there can't be any subcategories.
Big communities or such with complex subjects, etc. need to be able to organize better. It would be a SMALL step for Discord to implement, but A BIG STEP for usability of Discord!

Holding off on implementing something like this is going to push users to guilded.gg even though they don't have some of the other features discord has. Being able to keep things truly organized would be amazing.

hell, i was just going on about this on a server with friends.
"why dont we get sub-categories within categories for server layouts on discord?
it'd make it alot easier to organize specific channels instead of having two-five different categories for the same thing (roleplay areas; archived channels; staff chats; games; etc) and having it all cluttered up when you could have sub-categories within a category and collapse those by themself without collapsing the entire category"

Would be very helpful to create subcategories.
Threads are already the same tool for chat why not for categorie also..
We have Categorie for Games and it eould help to habe the possibility to create Sub Categorie for Text and Voice to hide the text Channel for example, but keep it under the same Game Category. So we have now 2 Categories for text and voice.

As a community organizer and discord manager, I can also 100% agree that this is a heavy requirement.

I think that I have an Idea to circumvent this issue, it's not as cool as sub category would be, but can help :
First create your channels in a unique category to group them at the bottom of your menu:
#category1_subcategory1_chan1
#category1_subcategory1_chan2
#category1_subcategory2_chan1
etc. You can add as much level of sub-categories as you want.
Then create an #index channel with messages forming a tree like this :- Category 1:
- Sub category 1:
- Channel 1 : link to channel 1
- Channel 2 : link to channel 2
etc.
This works quite nicely.
A tip : in your channels, at the top and bottom, add a link back to the #index.
Too bad that we can't give a name to the links though.
What you think ? Any ideas to make this better ?-1
