No notifications at all on mobile
Posting here as requested by customer support.
For months now, Discord notifications on Android have been showing inconsistently. In the last month they haven't showed at all, despite many normal notifications, mentions, DMs.
This is very broken, similar to a phone that doesn't ring. How would you know when to pick up?
Please fix that.
Yes, I've checked that notifications are on in app settings, in system settings, and I've restarted my phone. I've now missed a lifetime event of a friend's because notifications don't work.
Customer support's first answer included:
"if the system recognizes that you're online anywhere besides mobile, you will not receive push notifications."
I've seen this mentioned in a couple of support threads. That's the crux of the issue: it's a bad design decision. If there is the smallest bug in recognizing whether the user is "online anywhere" (whatever that means), mobile notifications are wrongly turned off.
A much better design would be to push on both devices, and dismiss on both when the message is read on any device. If there is overtriggering and the user is bothered by extra notifications that make the phone vibrate, for example, the fix is to put the phone on silent phone. That's easy and still leaves visual cues for interrputions from other apps. Putting the phone on silent is something that people actually do.
What support is asking - logging off from a desktop app, shutting down a desktop, is too much. This is 2021 - people leave their desktops on, maybe lock the screen when leaving, at worst put it on sleep. Shutting down completely is not a common action anymore. Besides, the online detection mode means that if you go to the restroom, you won't get notifications on your phone until the default 10 minutes. I understand this is adjustable, but I suspect most users will never know of notice as missing a message by 10 minutes is acceptable.
The issue is the failure mode is very bad - no notifications at all.
Again, I understand support is asking me to log out, shut down, change password to confirm the current no-notifications-if-online mode. It might confirm it, but won't fix the actual design issue.
Please make notifications always on, online or not, and dismiss in both places if read anywhere. This is the foolproof way.
Thanks
