Text entry box disappears when using keyboard on ipad

The text entry field just disappears frequently when using an external keyboard on ipad.  The existing messages scroll to the top of the screen (they can be retrieved by scrolling down) and the text entry box disappears.  Occasionally this fixes itself but often the app needs to be killed to get back to normal.  This happens all the time.
