android UI update complaints
hoo man i really hate this update. this update both made the app visually painful to look at and unpleasant to use.
something i noticed right off the bat when I opened the app was that the whole app seemed broken. if i left a channel open for more than 10 seconds, the text area would break and become a blank screen instead of a cut off preview of what people were saying. this would happen with the user and server/channel lists as well, but instead they would take longer to load and would glitch in and out. also, why is there a scrollbar in the channel list? what purpose does that serve other than to be distracting?
i really hate how inconsistent the text is. names are too small and too bold to see clearly, and status messages are even worse for that. dates and time alongside the new message and new day dividers are also horrible for font size. because of this inconsistency, i can't change the font size to boost the unreadable text without making all message text too big. the most annoying thing related to messaging is the fact that the hidebox for blocked messages stands out because it's much darker than the background. this, in my opinion, seems counterproductive. there's a reason i blocked someone, and that is to hide what they say. if the hidebox for a blocked user's message stands out, it doesn't really work to hide their messages. mentioning another user also doesn't highlight the ping while you're writing the message, so i genuinely thought it broke when i went to ping a friend and it didn't highlight the ping text in my message preview as blue.
what bothers me the most is images. i use the app on my phone for sharing images, and the fact i can't share an image to discord from my gallery the way i used to bothers me. i don't like sharing straight from my gallery into a text channel and then having the "share" section show up. most of the time when I share an image, it's in response to something, so not being able to reply is bothersome. the only other way i can send an image is also quite annoying, because instead of [ search for image > share > go to selected channel > press send ] or [ search for image > share > go to selected channel > go to different channel > press send ], i have to do [ press + button > view all > menu > gallery > search for image > done > send message ] and i can't even bring the image into a different channel, so if i attach it to a channel i don't want to send it to, i have to restart that entire process. i probably wouldn't have this much of an issue if my phone wasn't where all of my reaction images and memes i frequently send to chat were saved, but here we are. something else that bothers me with images is that you can't see the file name, which looks especially strange with the header when you tap on one. this also goes with gifs, where you can't see the link. also, when you attach an image, it fills in some strange way that i can't really explain well. it's not fixed to fill a square box, and if it's more wide than it is tall, it will take up too much space above the message. it also seems that the feature for sending a compressed image when the file is too large has been completely removed as well. i tried sending a photo i took to a friend, and just because I did not get the prompt to compress the image, i had to manually scale the image down through my gallery.
certain parts of the app also look strange when they match with the curved UI of my phone. specifically opening a user's profile and tapping on the "set status" option. there's a small white bar above this and the fact that the menu curves when approaching the edge of my screen looks really off, especially because I'm used to the sharp look of discord - and the white bar horribly contrasts with the rest of the app. the blocked message hidebox also is curved - which adds to its distracting look. searching also bothers me - why add pages when you can't jump to a specific page, or even sort the messages by newest/oldest? it just seems unnecessary. and, the notifications section notified me of things that happened before the update.
the only good thing i can find in this update is the added search options, although despite the fact i do like that part, i would be completely willing to give that up if i could revert to the version of the app before this update.
