will I see nickname, displayname, AND username on profiles?

You'd see what you currently see, the server name and username. I don't see why that would change.

Since I emailed support and its basically a non human running that stuff now...

    I'll summarize here:

Do you know how AWFUL of an idea this is??? This not only will make Discord more bland, but also take away a feature unique to Discord, and will take away something I PAID FOR with nitro!

You’re all about money, so don’t come crying when no one likes this abhorrent change to usernames and everyone starts to cancel their nitro.

Do not change how the usernames function, no one likes this and itll only make things worse.

This is going to make account hacking worse than it already is, not to mention you guys love to ignore trans people, people who change their name a lot, and other such stuff...

You already gutted Accessibility which makes it very hard for me and many other people to use your app, but this may just be the final nail in the coffin for me to stop paying for nitro.

I and many others do not support this change, especially since username sniping and whatnot will become more prevalent, as well as account h*cking and impersonation going through the roof. I would love for this to be optional only, because a lot of people including myself, dont want to fight for the same username and most likely will not get it due to it being first come first serve, as an example, my account was made in 2017, but an account from 2015 will probably snap up my username and i'll be shit out of luck.

I will most likely cancel my nitro (which is the more expensive one) if this change goes through, as it is useless and there isnt even ONE positive to this change at all. In addition to that, I PAID for my discriminator to be what I set it to, so its taking another feature away from nitro users.

I just dont want my username to change because I know its going to be snapped up by some hacker with a bunch of b*tted accounts from 2015... plus, its much easier with how the current system works anyways, esp when adding friends since you'll usually have it written down or share a server with them.

    TLDR;

I know why they did this…. Your username and display name can’t be expl*cit with the new system but it can with the old one. The company wanted to pick up a new sponsor so they (Discord) wrested control from us over our previously unlimited self-expression. Fricking atrocious.

For those wondering whats with all the censored words, the filter system was being fussy.

whatever the actual reason is behind this change (i don't buy the explanation tbh), i don't think they understand just how much chaos they're about to cause

i find this removing discrim feature Very Stupid.

Imagine paying for nitro to only see that the discrim feature is getting removed

Dasher481#2439 will now be just Dasher4812734.

This platform ALREADY has a massive impersonation problem, this is only going to make it worse. The fact that giving priority to username changes just goes to older accounts just makes it easy for some lucky person with an older account to easily take @Markiplier and that's that. Look at Twitter. You see what's going on there? You see how the rollout of the twitter blue checks went? That's going to happen on discord if this change goes through.

I am writing to express my concerns about the recently announced changes to the username and identity systems on Discord. While I understand that the intention is to make it easier for users to connect and hang out with friends, I believe these changes may have numerous unintended consequences that could negatively impact the user experience, security, and the platform's unique identity.

    1. Security and Scams: With the introduction of unique alphanumeric usernames, there is likely to be a race among users to secure their preferred usernames. This rush may lead to an increase in hacking attempts and scams, as users with desirable usernames may become targets for those looking to acquire those usernames by any means necessary. This creates an entirely new set of security concerns for the platform and its users.

    2. Nitro and Custom Discriminators: Many Discord users purchase Nitro specifically to obtain custom discriminators. By removing discriminators from the username system, you are eliminating a significant incentive for users to support Discord through Nitro subscriptions. This may lead to a decline in Nitro revenue and user support.

    3. Complex Handles: The new username system may inadvertently lead to more complicated handles, as users resort to using random numbers and underscores to create unique usernames. This actually makes it harder to memorize and share usernames, negating the intended benefits of the change.

    4. Discord's Unique Purpose: Discord is fundamentally different from platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. It is designed for conversations and community building, rather than individual self-promotion. Discriminators offer a practical and efficient way to distinguish between users who share the same name, allowing everyone to have their desired username without confusion or conflict.

    5. Impact on Community-Made Bots: The proposed changes will likely break many community-made bots that have become essential components of the Discord experience. These bots often rely on the current username and discriminator system, and changing it will require significant modifications to the bots' code. This may encourage users to turn to more expensive alternatives like Mee6, putting additional financial strain on communities.

    6. Privacy and Stalking: Unique handles may make it easier for users to be stalked, as they are often reused across various social media platforms. This poses a real danger to users who value their privacy and safety, and raises concerns about the platform's commitment to protecting its users.

    7. Loss of Identity and Community: The removal of discriminators could lead to a loss of personal identity and community belonging for users who have become attached to their unique identifiers. This change may make users feel disconnected from their online communities and reduce their sense of belonging on the platform.

    8. Confusion and Miscommunication: Users may experience confusion and miscommunication as they adapt to the new system, especially during the transition period. This could lead to messages being sent to the wrong person, difficulty finding friends, or struggles with understanding new display names.

    9. Accessibility and Inclusivity: The limitation of allowed characters in the new usernames may inadvertently exclude users from non-English speaking backgrounds, as well as those who rely on special characters to represent their names. This could be seen as a step back in terms of accessibility and inclusivity on the platform.

    10. Increased Moderation Efforts: As users adapt to the new system, there may be an increased need for moderation to handle disputes over usernames, potential impersonation, and other issues that may arise. This could place additional strain on server moderators and administrators.

    11. Loss of User Trust: The proposed changes may lead to a loss of trust among long-time users, as they may feel that their voices and concerns are not being heard or taken into consideration by the Discord team. This could result in users seeking alternative platforms for their communication needs.

    12. Compatibility Issues: Third-party integrations, tools, and services that rely on the current username and discriminator system may face compatibility issues with the new system. This could lead to disrupted user experiences and additional work for developers to update their tools and services

Furthermore, the platform's unique identity, which has been a key factor in its success, is at risk with these changes. By adopting a username system similar to other platforms, Discord risks losing its distinct appeal that has attracted millions of users.

In conclusion, I urge you to reconsider the proposed changes to the username and identity systems on Discord. The concerns outlined here highlight the potential negative consequences of these changes. I believe it is crucial to preserve the unique aspects of Discord while finding a solution that addresses the need for growth and improvements without jeopardizing user experience, security, and privacy.

Thank you for your attention to these concerns. I hope you will carefully consider the potential consequences of the proposed changes and work towards a solution that balances the needs of the platform with the best interests of its users.

according to the blog post, one of the reasons for the change was that people don't remember their discriminator numbers.

the reason for that is because we don't need to. when sharing discord stuff we just whip out our phone to look at it, or send it in an email or write it down..

sure the case sensitivity is a slight inconvenience, but most people just copy and paste from a text or a message on facebook messenger, or a tweet or a profile on some social media thing.

QR codes are a thing for business cards or branding.
    just use invite links.

it's obvious you're only doing this to drive supply and demand on usernames so you can sell verified account checkmarks. You create a problem that doesn't exist so you can sell the solution.

Absolutely disgusting. i'm apalled. You guys were the chosen ones, discord.
you saved us from skype! remember?

I plan to now. It was the one feature that kept me back from paying for nitro. I did not want to support discord while they had a god-awful username system. I can fully back discord and push for their success now.

Yes, thats exactly why its an awful system. No other website do people have to pull out their phone just to know what their own username is. I've had so many awkward interactions trying to add people on discord because they don't know their username and I have to guide them in showing them how to find it. No more! Thank goodness discord is finally catching up to the rest of social media platforms.

I'm just curious here since they said displayname is supposed to be like the primary name, but if only those (server/nickname and username) are shown does friends list also show username? or displayname as I would guess? otherwise people changing all 3 could be confusing to find if you don't realize you have to open their profile using the context menu and not the popup. server profiles are already confusing enough for me, as entertaining as they can be

Why even use Discord at this point? With each update it's bloat at best and detrimental at worst. I don't want AI chatbots, but at least I can disable those! The fact that they thought this was a good idea as if they don't already have a horrible scambot problem on top of impersonation being bad as is is absurd. I was just telling everyone how handy nitro's file size increase has been, how the qol features have been handy; and now I have to go and cancel it because I'd literally rather go back to Skype than financially support this trainwreck.

On that note! If it happened to Skype, it can happen to Discord! The minute someone realizes this app is no longer what it was needed to be, is the minute there will be plenty of alternatives. Thank god for that.

No one wanted to pay $8 for a stupid blue checkmark. Who is going to pay $10 to not even have their own username? Removing discriminators is a terrible idea.

Go for it my dude. I can then just add as many or few numbers of my choosing, rather than have to have 4 random numbers.

I genuinely like my discriminator and overall having the tag at the end of our usernames is what makes Discord unique. Overall this has got to be one of the worst decisions that Discord has made and its for a problem that barely even exists. :((

do you remember your phone number? of course you do. you're smart, right?

    it's 11 numbers long.
    a discriminator is 4 numbers.
4 numbers you can change to something more memorable with a nitro subscription.

I understand you are a chad and have a real life. you meet people in the real world.
but discord is not in the real world. it's on your phone. they're going to have to look at their phone to add you to their friends list at some point.
same as you are going to have to look at yours to add them.

This is a UX problem. not a problem with the system.

Small-time creators and mildly famous gamers - especially in insular communities - are going to go through hell with impersonation. Getting my parents and other non-tech savvy friends to use Discord was greatly aided by the system you have, and I pale at the thought of walking them through a pomelo system. I like going by FraidyCat but its taken almost everywhere! I wouldn't even remotely pitch for a twitter blue like verification badge either, if that's where this is going. Bundled in nitro or not, I really, really do not want that sort of feature. Discord is private and self-moderated, I'm not keen on people snagging a screenshot of my name and being able to friend request me or harass me immediately.

Discord, no! What the hell, and why?

If you want to make it easy for people to add eachother, add a fricking QR code and unique shortened url for people to share. Don't... throw out everything good about the username system for a *solvable problem*

Discord. Don't fix what isn't broken.

By doing this, your going to make security harder. What about that neat STREAMING feature that, you know, censored the identifier numbers? You're going to break that. And this will cause folks to be stalked, harassed and other awful things. It could even get some folks killed.

This isn't good for the community. Leave the numbers in. Good grief.

This change takes the thing I like most about discord away. I liked the 4 digit numbers. It makes everyone able to have the username they want without having to add 500 different numbers and underscores to get their desired name. People wont have to worry about rare usernames, & impersonation among other things. The way things are currently is fine. Its honestly better if "only" 9999 people can have the username "Jake" instead of just one person.

If anything it would be better if they kept the 4 digit numbers, but included a profile name as well.
