An alternative to new username system announcment
So to start this off, I think it's pretty clear that not many people are happy with the new proposed username system (removing the discriminator #numbers and replacing it with a unique @).
While I can be counted among them, I would like to give the discord staff the benefit of the doubt and think that they are not blindly picking things to ruin and genuinely need to change the current system for some reason.
So my proposal I think would be a nice middle ground between removing some of the *potential* complexity that sharing usernames now technically allows for, and keeping the system users enjoy and is a part of the discord identity we have all grown to know.
- First off, instead of the discriminator only allowing for 4 numericals I think switching to a 4 digit alphanumerical would solve the issue of only 9999 users being able to choose the same name. Having a-z and 0-9 available would allow for just shy of 1.7 million users to have the exact same name. This would also be an incentive for more nitro purchases because people already buy it now to be #0001 or #6969, and it's funny to be able to make my name hopscotch#anal.
- Second, and with a heavy heart, I suggest restricting the username portion to the latin characters, numerals, and standard accented letters. While this is undoubtably unfortunate for speakers who do not use the roman alphabet, this does cover a majority of users, and this is a company based in the united states. While I do not like this change it would reduce complexity by another factor as you no longer have to worry about 𝔴𝔢𝔦𝔯𝔡 and 𝕗𝕒𝕟𝕔𝕪 names being both difficult to communicate, difficult to moderate, and as i have personally witnessed during a bot raid, used to hide accounts from easy filtering.
EDIT
After sleeping, I want to amend this. My thought process was they're doing it anyway, I should meet them halfway, but I don't actually think that's reasonable. I think the better play would simply to be to remove the 𝔴𝔢𝔦𝔯𝔡 and 𝕗𝕒𝕟𝕔𝕪 class of characters but keep the non-latin letter characters.
EDIT OF MY EDIT
who cares if someones name is hard to give out THAT IS THEIR problem that THEY made for THEMSELF when choosing that username and they are free to change it whenever. keep that as is.
- Remove case sensitivity. Gonna be honest, this one is wild to me that it was ever implemented to begin with. Display names can tackle the brunt of people wanting capital letters themselves.
Lastly, I recommend to everyone to vote with their wallets and unsubscribe from nitro and cite this new change as the reason. Discord has made so very very very very very very very many decisions i think are harebrained, shortsighted, and quite frankly bad for the user experience. This is the first time I have bothered to make a forums account and say something about it. I'm saddened to see as years have gone by discord has become worse and worse and seemingly spearheaded by people who do not understand their user base or product.
Skype was also too big to fail, right up until it did.

I came here and made an account just to tell them I cancelled my nitro because of this. Voting on every thread and leaving a comment too.

Generally +1, BUT
huge -1 to the 2nd point (I don't think non-Eng people should be treated as expendable collateral like this.

falorni I agree. I have amended my post. I posted it at like 3am and my thought process was "well they're doing it anyways i might as well meet them halfway" but I don't think that's a reasonable compromise
