Button bloat has gotten too much

I totally agree, I like to keep discord at half the width of a 1080p monitor, or at most half of a 2k monitor. At this point the field to type messages is 20-25 characters wide for me. And the buttons keep it constrained to that width even for a fairly long post, when they could at least float above the message after it becomes a wall of text or something.

All I really want is an option for the ui to put the buttons on top of the message field at smaller width windows or something. Look at this image of a long post and tell me this makes sense:

I've been having similar issues. I use Discord in a smaller window to the side, similar to Zeon Jupiter in the thread, the typing field is now restricted to about 6 to 7 characters. It's absolutely unusable. Mostly posting in the hopes that the influx of forum posts makes them change things

I also use discord in the corner of my screen. This sucks. I am an active roleplayer and generally someone who uses discord all day and this has screwed with my muscle memory and readability. On the right hand side there are literally only 2 out of the 4-… *5* buttons that i use. Gif and emojis. Why would i bother with stickers when emojis are right there? Why would i bother with the nitro button when i would never buy it for myself, much less other people? Why would i bother with using bots in servers that arent mine!? Heck why would i bother with the hard to use menu to get to my commands at all? But on the left is the + button which i do actually use! A+ design! If more things could be put into that little +, that would be great.

But ugh, if i could disable updating on discord entirely i would. I don't want to have to keep dealing with nonsense UI changes that are of no benefit to me.

Abso-fruitly. The text box is so small now. And I will never ever in my life use “apps” and “commands” of Discord, so that button is just a thorn in my side. Not to mention “stickers” and “nitro”. Horrible UX.

I have the same issue. I use Discord in a smaller window to the side, so (like the others) I get this tiny column where I type my text. The only buttons I use while typing are the Emoji button and the add image button, the others (gif, sticker, etc.) I use on their own 99% of the time.

This is BAD UI DESIGN. I get Discord wants me to gift Nitro, start an activity, or whatever. But once I start typing, those buttons are no longer relevant.

Now, if the icons only made the first line short, it would be fine with me. Or, do it like the Android app does: once I start typing, all, the extra buttons go away.

Though the Android text bar is getting very very crowded by default too… and the Discord icons partially duplicate my Android keyboard icons.

    • Prioritize Key Actions: Identify the most important actions users need and keep those buttons visible. Less critical buttons can be hidden in menus or grouped under collapsible sections.
    • Use Iconography Wisely: Instead of text buttons, use icons where appropriate. Ensure these icons are intuitive and universally recognized to prevent confusion.
    • Utilize Dropdown Menus or Flyouts: Group related actions under a single button that expands to reveal more options. This reduces the immediate button count while keeping functionality accessible.
    • Progressive Disclosure: Show only the primary buttons initially and reveal secondary options as needed. This approach keeps the interface clean and focuses on the current task.
    • Adaptive and Responsive Design: Depending on the screen size, adapt the layout to hide less-used buttons or turn them into more streamlined controls like hamburger menus for smaller screens.
    • Test and Iterate: Conduct user testing to identify which buttons are actually used frequently and remove or reposition those that aren't. Continuous feedback helps to refine the UI to better suit user needs.

It looks like things can be changed, but not improved… the buttons now stick at the bottom, instead of at the top of a multiline box. But still in that very narrow column, with too many buttons.
