Add functionality to nickname others
-
So, my explaining skills suck alot, but basically what ekusu meant. (Thanks ekusu)

It would certainly be useful for those people who like to change their names and avatars constantly to have a nick only you can see so yo can keep track of them.
1 -
There's a section called "NOTE" under people's profiles which can only be visible to the person who wrote the note. -6 -
Y'know that thing in the user profile called notes? You can keep track of who is who in there. Only you can see notes you make.
C ya

I agree that this would be a very nice feature. It would be nice to chat with my brothers in DMs using their real names, but go back to server-specified names in other cases. Thanks Discord!
1 -
I agree! DISCORD THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN, HEAR US!
1 -
That seems like a really cool idea! Although since it may be abused in things like evidence, maybe make it so it has the person's real username/server nickname in parenthesis at the end, just to avoid confusion. 0 -
It's here already. It's called "notes". Only you can see a note you make, and only you can change it.
-10 -
Ever heard of notes? No?
-11 -
And why is this in overlay category?
-7 -
Yep, I would definitely use this feature as I hate having to view the notes to figure out how I know a person's alias...
3 -
Yeah Evan, I like the idea of being able to add a personally viewable alias or tag to each user, but to replace their alias for all to see, that's a violation of privacy laws globally. If they wanted everyone to see their real names, they would use their real names as their alias.

Is this marked completed because you can put it in the note field?
If so, I don't think that's what the OP meant -- I think they meant something like Steam's where it will show up next to the user's nickname, not something you have to click on a user to see. Notes are handy, but it's not the same.
Also, I don't see a way to search notes, so you would have to go through each user, clicking on their name, to see if the one you're looking for is in the notes.
10 -
Why is this marked as completed? This feature is not available.
10 -
Totally agree. Steam has this, and it's very helpful.

This would be great! I often find myself utilizing this feature on other platforms to keep track of who is who. A lot of people change their name often leading to confusion. You can already kinda do this by making a note for them. A name history similar to steam would also be nice.
3 -
Yes, Please DO this discord i have a friend that changes his name every 2 weeks for the MEME's and i dont know who he is because of it. Hard to keep track!
3 -
I'd also like to echo how useful a feature this would be. Right now user notes is okay for remembering who is whom, but as @TehShrike mentioned local nicknames for CTRK+K would be a huge quality of life improvement.
1 -
The feature will be extremely helpful, if such nicknames are pingable. No obfuscated nicknames anymore.

I would also like this. I have people on my friends list whom I know in real life but change their display name(s) constantly. It's really confusing. Being able to see something like this
[My Assigned Name] (@[Server Display Name]/@[Global Display Name])
Where [My Assigned Name] is the note I took down to remind me about who the user is
AND
Where [Server Display Name] is the user's display name for the server
AND
Where [Global Display Name] is the user's overall display name
would be pretty awesome awesome.
These would, of course, only be visible to the local user (and not the server nor to anyone globally). It would be a simple way to easily note who is talking. I would think that a 24 (maybe 32) character limit would sufficient and make styling not too terrible to implement.

I need this, I'm always losing track of who's who!

Still a problem. But hey, we have games and tons of other useless crap that has nothing to do with the original intent of the app. I like Discord, but get so discouraged when any application tries to become all things to everyone. It never is a success. Instead, why not be the best at the thing it was intended to be. This would include being able to see who the heck you are are chatting with regardless of how many names they have or how frequently they change them. Add a nickname field so we can put our own ID for a given user. Please.

This would be super convenient and should be pretty simple to implement, I think? Hopefully the Discord Team wouldn't mind doing so. I've had my friends change their names and icons so much without a heads up so I eventually have to check our messages to see if I even know em' or remember who they are. It'd be so nice to just be able to give em a Nickname for DM's and such, not disimilar to Facebook Messenger's nickname options. Also if they're allowing others to choose their own Nickname in DM's, showing a "_ has changed their name to _" whenever a Nickname was changed would also be nice. Just the little things for flavor of life and such.

Please add nicknames to friends ASAP

This sounds like a useful feature. On some servers I visit, some people change their display name regularly and it can be difficult to keep up. It would be helpful to be able to set a custom name for them which is displayed alongside their name in chat. That way, they could continue to express themselves in the way they choose, we wouldn't be inconvenienced by it and neither of us would be interfering with the other.
Yes, you could simply click the names of the people you don't recognise to find out their account name, but sometimes even those change, and if you aren't familiar with a person's account name, you may not recognise them. It's also extra effort.

Yeah there is an AKA tab when you are in a message with someone but that isnt always the most reliable of information
-2 -
I don't think that I would ever use this, but I see how it can be useful. 0 -
@Da Bald Eagul - true, you can do that, but ideally you can see them in the list, otherwise you have to open the profile of each friend, on by one, until you find the one you are looking for... There is a post for it here: https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360030124711-Nicknames-on-the-friends-list
@Laenrda - If it displays to the user who set it, and not globally, then this is not in violation of any law across the globe. There would be an issue if Discord would offer up this information without the user knowing, or of adding this information on behalf of someone would make it available to others, but the above does neither of these things.
