I just personally think that, we should have the unread and read messaging feature. Since, if I would ever talk to my friends, and I need to tell them something very important. I guess, that I need to know if they see my message.

  knowing if the person you sent your message to has read your message is a benefit

  Yes this would be good, but only in Direct Messages. It would not work well at all in servers.
