Message Threads
完了Hi Discord Team and dear reader!
This would be a feature request for Message Threads, like we can see on Slack.
As a matter of fact, when sending messages in a crowded channel (+15ppl) conversations can easily get lost in the mix. Message threads solve this issue by creating a "sub-channel" on the message that initiated the thread, allowing participants to continue their conversation without spamming the main channel and allowing other users to do the same.
Thanks a lot,
loving Discord!

yes the reply and forward options are very very needed for any messaging app specially when in channels

Upvote Upvote Upvote .... How many upvotes does this need before we get it?? lol.

After using Slack, this is the feature I see to be most achingly absent from Discord. Please add thread support. It feels so tidy to have sub-topics and off-topic comments branch off naturally!

DIscord needs threads. Busy servers become unusable when used for conversation.

Threads threads threads! Come on already. I'd like to setup up a Discord server for my game, but I know it'll become an unholy mess of intertwined conversations with no easy way to manage them. I can' create a separate channel for each conversation either, that's far too impractical, and since we're expecting convos to be started by users too.
e.g. LIV uses Discord for support, but if you have anything that goes beyond a couple replies, or replies that aren't very quick, you have to just email them to keep a coherent thread going. That means that discord is not nearly as useful as it could be for searching for issues and getting answers.

I can't believe this isn't a thing yet.

I finally switched from TeamSpeak 3 to Discord and although I'm a fan of some of the features, I was thoroughly disappointed when I realized there's no threading, like I'm used to with Slack and Microsoft Teams for work. Without threading, there's more functionality in iMessage or Facebook Messenger, giving me and my friends no reason to abandon our group chats elsewhere.
Please add this - otherwise all my friends are going to stay in our iMessage group chat. If you want to keep people on your platform and to control their attention, make it easy to converse. Nobody likes spamming the chat or making a million text chats to keep topics/conversations organized.2 -
I would like to see threads like featured on Slack. Especially with games going away now, having threads as a dedicated Nitro subscriber would be great. I really like supporting Discord but I belong to some communities who refuse to switch from Slack because they value the threading feature that is unavailable on Discord. Please Discord team, add threading capability to messages (perhaps as a toggled option for channels) so that we can better manage conversations on Discord.

I don’t like this.

Yes, please yes. But not like Slack does it; it's too hidden.
Take a look at flowdock, it's the best of both worlds.Right now, it's easy to get lost amongst multiple conversations when we have many people in a channel.

Just signing my stamp of... begging on this thread. Pretty please Discord!
Found Guilded.gg and really don't want to move over since we've been with Discord for so long now. But some features are big game changers.2 -
Yes! That would be great feature and a solution for big servers and for those who don't like when people start flood on different themes of discussion on their server.

Wow, I can't believe this has not been incorporated yet. Such a useful and crucial feature!
Please implement ASAP! :)

I think there's a misconception of implementing message threads in discord would make it look like reddit threads, where all threads are stacked on top of each other and overall it makes it quite messy. But this is design problem, not the feature itself.
I think Discord team need to look at how Slack made this feature quite nice and tidy by adding side column window to show the threads and completely detached from the flow of the current conversation.
Also, server-wise, I thought Discord has a distributed system already and making an addition to this incredibly amazing system should not be of huge challenge.

I have an idea - why not have quoted replies (Whatsapp like), if implementing threads is becoming a challenge?
My assumption is - it is hard for the Discord team to implement threads because the current data model doesn't account for that. And changing it across the entire stack, updating all the clients can prove to be very difficult and challenging (maybe almost impossible). Hence, the delay on taking a decision on threaded conversations.
In this case, atleast the ability of quote a reply helps a lot in the UX. When I read someone's reply if its quoted, I would what exactly they are talking about and I can click on the quoted message to go/scroll to the original message. I think this feature would go a long way in helping reading longer, threaded conversations. This feature would be very useful for programming communities, where longer conversations (spanning days) are common.

@rayanon Quoted reply can already be done in discord (manually). But Message threads are totally different from that where you want to follow up on a long conversation which can be an absolute mess if it is on the main channel. The main reason for having message threads is to detach from the main channel conversation flow and carry on without interrupting/confusing others.

@MessedUpMind , the quoted reply in Discord currently is - you have to copy the text, and start it with "> " . Another way is you have to enable dev options and then copy the message link and start the conversation by pasting the message link. Both of them are super painful. (I have not seen any other way to quote reply. Would love to know if something else exists.) What I meant is a an option in each message where I can click "quote reply" and reply to it and Discord does the rest I mentioned above.
I absolutely agree that threaded conversations are different thing, and this does not solve that problem. This a different attempt which might be a low-hanging fruit, which solves one part of the problem - context.

I'm surprised how many more conversation and upvote Discord team need to at least reply back to any of these feedbacks! Are they really ignorant to this very important problem...

I hope they atleast reply and speak their mind - however different it is from ours.

Hey Inspire.
I think we all know this is a chat platform, not an social media like Twitter, y'know Discord was made to chat with gamers?
I love this idea, but I don't think it would fit in pretty well, now announcement posts.. Could? But I wouldn't say so.
Don't give your hopes up though! Ya never know...1 -
It can could disabled like add reactions. Still amazing IDEA!

Suggestion for an alternative to threads.
Create sidebar conversations.
You could either create them manually or automatically by replying to someone.
In the main chat they would be tagged with an icon.
That icon would correspond to a sidebar conversation that would be listed by bump order as a sub channel under the main channel.
By clicking the sidebar conversation you filter the main chat window to just the relevant sidebar messages.
By collapsing the sidebar conversation list you remove sidebar messages.

Still hoping for this feature! Thinking the best way to go about it is to allow us to enable threads per-channel, similar to how we can disable reactions per-channel.

@SourMatt I totally agree, that's a great idea. I too am really hoping Discord takes note of the desire for this :)

Adding my support behind this. One of the biggest complaints we get in our chat is that you lose conversations because too many people are talking at once. Adding in threads would greatly improved our server's functionality.

We have a nice little community developing in our Discord server. It's awesome! My biggest complaint is waking up in the morning, catching up on discussions I might have missed, and then wanting to reply to a message quite a ways back. I basically have to @them in the channel and sometimes manually quote them to bring the context back. Private messaging them never feels like the appropriate response because it's too personal and still has the problem of having to manually quote them to restore the context of the original message.
Threads solve every one of these concerns and they are implemented wonderfully in Slack. The problem is that Discord is better for being a public community communication platform and Slack's own developers have stated that they don't intend Slack to be used like that. Discord is better at giving users autonomy, such as the ability to adjust users' individual volumes or even block someone, whereas Slack is better for an organization like a business.
Threads would be very useful. Or at the very least a quote reply button that auto-fills the text box with an @ to the person you're replying to and a clickable link that scrolls the window up to the message being replied to (similar to Facebook messenger quote replies)

Keep the comments going! Hopefully the sheer amount of chatter on this request should get dev attention :)
1 -
Totally agree... this is the one thing I really miss in Discord.
1 -
Yes please. This feature would be so great for artists, as they can comment and give feedback to a single image without being lost in the section chat and other artists posts on top of theirs.

Discord needs this. I want so badly to like Discord more than Slack, but without it I just can't.
