Let us quote again...
If i'm being perfectly honest, the new reply system is a bit... ugly.
The text is faded out and small, so it's difficult to read, and going to the message isn't a great option either, since jumping around the message logs can be a bit confusing and might make you lose track of the conversation (which seems like the exact opposite of what was intended)... Also, placing it above the person's username doesn't make much sense either, and just looks weird, same goes for changing the username area to include the person they replied to, it's confusing.
As far as i can tell the two major upsides of replies are the fact that they're not editable, and that they link to the source message, and as I don't like the idea of criticising something without giving a half decent suggestion as to how to fix it, so here's my idea: Merge the replies and quotes into one system. Any quote generated using the button (and not markdown) will looks a little bit different, maybe have the vertical bar colored blue, to show that it's unedited, of course it would go back to normal as soon as any change is made to the quote (this is a bit unrelated but if this is done, it would also be nice to disable link previews in quotes, since those are usually unnecessary, and i usually edit them out using markdown "<>"), as for message links, by this point we already have a fancy looking blue bar next to our quote, we might as well turn that bar (and surrounding empty space, to make it easier to click) into a button, that takes you directly to the message referenced!
Additionally, an option to change the style of quotes (maybe "Large VS Compact"?) could also help in case some people prefer the way replies look. (I personally don't, but opinions are subjective.)
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and i hope it will be taken into consideration.
If you want to use the old system you can manually do the > markup. In a server where I tried that the reply button went away. Personally I'd rather they keep both buttons-1
Absolutely! Let us quote again! There are two improvements in the new "reply" option in that it links to the original message and makes it look cleaner in who you are replying to. It's rather ugly but I don't care about that. But it has a major flaw in that it replies to only one message. Many people split their ideas into multiple messages and it's very annoying that you can't reply to a FULL point anymore.
What I want is to be able to respond to multiple messages at a time, have the ability to shorten, mark, bolden, etc. certain parts of the message and to be able to intercept long messages by responding to smaller chunks of it at a time. Guess what, I could do that with the old quotes and the new replies make all of this impossible while also not fixing a single thing I cared about. Sure, you can see the profile picture of the person you're responding to but mentioning the person was sufficient to understand who you're responding to. Now I can only do all that by manually using the ">" markup and that is what I will do, but now you made it far more laborious than it needs to be.
Ok, let the "reply" lovers have their replies, but bring back the quotes!6
Just to push back a tiny bit on the idea that the only benefit is seeing their pfp it also links the message. So if you're replying to something an hour ago or more people can click the message to see context for what you're replying to. It's more than just a picture. But I agree there is utility in quotes as they were0
I already mentioned it. I said two improvements. 1) Links to the original message. 2) makes it cleaner and easier to see who you're responding to. However, while linking to the original message may seem like a great improvement, it's actually a trade-off. Previously, you could quote the entire message, or shorten to only the relevant part so you would usually don't even need to go to the original message as the context was there in the quote. Now, the reply doesn't even show the full message, only the beginning of it, so you are forced to click it in order to read the original message, but guess what? Now you can't go back to the response. Ok if the response is near the last of the messages, but what if it's somewhere in the middle and now you are forced to look for it.
So I really don't see any clear-cut improvements. Only trade-offs or minor things like the profile picture and a proper name, rather than a mention. I seriously do not welcome this change. I don't see why quotes should be replaced with replies when they offer significantly different features. Why not leave both available? The drop-down list will be slightly larger? Small issue in comparison to what's been done now.2
Razor all I've said is you can't throw away the change when people ask for it just because you don't like it. Maybe it's not in this thread but I've said elsewhere that they should keep both and I have acknowledged there are benefits to quotes and they should not be gotten rid of. There are times when I would use one and times where I would use the other. You're preaching to the choir on this one.
If you acknowledge there are benefits to the reply system you shouldn't be so hasty to say "throw it away devs you wasted your time". It's a step in the right direction and there are a LOT of good things about it. Having some suggestions for how it could be improved or suggesting that it not completely replace quotes are both appropriate responses. Spitting on the devs who finally implemented a feature that shows they're finally listening to their users is not and that's why I've been so in people's face about this-1
Vovere I mean...see I'm mixing up who I'm arguing with lol-2
Can't even keep who you're trying to cheerlead to straight, huh, Assimilater?
Go on and tell the class what those different utilities are.
What times are more suitable for Reply vs Quote?
Go ahead and convince folks why someone should want to use that ugly, clunky ass Reply function, warts and all.1
I don't understand why you're telling ME this, Assimilater. I never said that they should throw the replies out. In fact, like you, I said they could keep both. I don't see why "reply" and "quote" buttons couldn't be right next to each other. The only thing I said about replies is that I don't care about them and that the improvements they provide are far smaller than the problems they cause. They might improve the replies later on, but as they stand now, they're almost useless to me personally.
The only use for myself that I can visualise right now is a more convenient linking to messages rather than copying the message link which takes space. But I still do not plan on using this for the simple reason that they can't link across channels and far more importantly - can't link multiple messages.1
I mean...if you want to link across channels are you really replying? You might be quoting but not replying.
Ya I'm sorry I misdirected some of my convo. Idk how but mentally I merged what you and that razor guy were saying. It's just this is the first time I've seen discord implement a feature that has been asked for and given their propensity to ignore user feedback I now hate seeing them get punished by short sighted individuals bitching about it and saying it should be thrown away. The only reason I'm here is because I wanted to make suggestions to improve it (I know it's not perfect) but I don't wanna discourage them from listening to user feedback by telling them they were wrong to do so. So I got a bit worked up by that other guy0
