@Shaquanrulez There are issues with virtual camera drivers in many apps on newer macOS versions. codesign can "fix" it for at least most of the 3rd party apps. Check this post for more info: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360062088611/comments/360010835971

Discord on M1 Mac / Rosetta is laggy. Please update! Electron supports M1 already ...

Electron 11 supports M1, but the current version of Discord uses Electron 9.3.5 which does not have M1 support. If that's somehow a drop-in update, great! But I suspect it won't be that trivial.

Re: Electron 9.3.5, interesting. One would imagine that Electron 11 would have other advantages ... and based on my experience with other apps that have upgraded (such as VS Code, now available for Apple Silicon in their Insiders build), the performance / system load difference is massive.

What I hate most is that they don't give any feedback. If they would say: It's difficult to update to electron 11 we would at least know that they are working on it. Like this it seems like they just don't care and aren't even trying if discord would run with electron 11. Sadly they aren't the only one. I believe Slack is the only Electron based messaging app (of the one i'm using) that runs natively. WhatsApp? No. Teams? Nope. Twitch Deskop Client? haha no. What's up with the big players? Sad.

MS is working on Teams. They declared it and release can be expected in February.

Draw.io also released their Electron-based app...

    Discord has no excuses...

A handy reference on "who has updated for Apple Silicon?" https://isapplesiliconready.com

Is it so monumentally hard for Discord to post an update for the community on the state of the apple silicon transition?

I'm not necessarily talking dates...but at least a sign they're working on this...

For what we know they could have almost finished, they could be years behind or they could have not even started any work yet.

With most other companies you at least get a blog post, or something...even Adobe gave an update on the state of the transition for Audition, Premiere Pro, After Effects and Character Animator...and we know how annoying with updates Adobe can be...

Has anyone tried to side-load the iPad App / iPhone App to see if it would help with battery? I'm waiting for my M1 to arrive but discord is an app I used every day so I'm sorta concerned about the battery issue.

Discord and other big Electron apps aren’t updating because the Mac isn’t that big of a market, and M1 Macs comprise a tiny subset of Mac users. It’s a matter of priorities. They’re more focused on mobile -> Windows -> Mac.

Sideloading the iOS app violates Apple’s TOS and possibly Discord’s TOS as well.

Where do you get the idea that big Electron apps aren't updating for the mac? Slack is updated, Teams is updating in February. Electron is updated to work with Apple silicon. Of course there are priorities, and we can clearly assume that M1 isn't theirs as they're not updating. But this posts' point is for users to raise voices so that Discord can see that we exist and we want an updated version.

Also on the ToS point, do you have the link to that part of the ToS that says side-loading breaks it?

Just don’t expect Discord to update for Arm Mac anytime soon. I expect them and many other Electron apps to still ship x86 builds exclusively long after Apple stops selling Intel based Macs. Just be thankful there are Mac apps instead of no support lol

Lets stop user-shaming for having wish for support. If there is an app released, support for the relased app is fair to be expected.
And what most people miss here: 1-2 lines from anyone at Discord. Really just few lines is beyond the reach of Discord. Mac is so low prio to prevent them to write 2 lines??? Stop being a troll please...

I'm so confused as to where you get your information. I would be very interested to get your sources. As far as I know, lots of electron apps are already updating. You just completely ignored the apps I mentioned. In any case, it would be nice for them to switch to Electron 11 which supports ARM macs, but most importantly, even if they do not plan to update for it, it would be nice that they tell us about it.

Native support would be great! <3

This is getting ridiculous...2 and a half months of M1 macs, and not a single word...

Not even a "we're working on it" or a "we couldn't care less, sorry LOLz".
Ok that M1 macs are currently the minority, but failing to adapt to the new platform surely is shortsighted, as "soon" all new macs will have Apple Silicon.

Well after getting my MacBook, I can confirm that the experience is very low using discord on these machines. If it's a deal breaker for some I'd say avoid it until discord updates. Which is a shame cause other than that the computer is really cool!

    Discord Support 'Official' Response:

    Thanks for reaching out!

Sadly, M1 support is still on the pre-development stage so it's still not fully supported and there are still some areas that needs to be worked on.

On the other hand, if you would like to see changes to these systems in the future, then you can definitely vote up the suggestions at feedback.discordapp.com.

It would really help us out if you upvote the idea since feedback contributes greatly to our decision making of which features and fixes to implement in the future based on what our community wants.

I'm so sorry again that we don't have a current solution for you at this time, but I like to think that anything is possible in the future.

So we need more upvotes on this thread to get their attention on this issue? That's interesting. I wonder what kind of homemade technologies they have as part of electron that makes the switch to Electron 11 so hard for them.

In any case I guess it'll be in browser for me while we wait for an official release!

+1 for this, especially since I just tested CS:GO on my base model M1 Mac mini, and it's epic!!

Mac gaming just got a reboot.

+1 for m1, but what if we look the other way, instead of making the desktop app compatible with M1 why don't they bring the iPad app to the Mac platform? It is basically already running on the architecture. 🤔

  • 𝒞𝒽𝒶𝓃𝓌11

Fixed a long-time bug on Mac that would show Discord as "Not Responding" in the task manager even when working properly.

They actually fixed it WOOT! Now we wait for M1 support.

Mattusi At least the MacBooks don't have a TouchScreen, that may be a big difference compared to iPad. I guess it could be a workaround since M1 Macs allow iPad/iPhone Apps (if the devs did opt in for it), but a nativ Desktop App still would be better! :-)

    2
  • Mattusi

Emerelle For sure a native desktop app would be better but the iPad app is very good also, because now a days the iPad supports mouse/trackpad + keyboard it would be a chance for both apps to become even better

Dear Discord, please release an M1-native version of Discord. We need it. Thank you.

    +1 for M1 native.

They should drop support for Intel Macs, other than maybe fixing major bugs occasionally. No sense in continuing to support the old chip when Apple is moving away from it.

    @Mangoat

With Apple dropping support for Intel Macs over the next couple years, eventually Rosetta 2 will disappear and Discord will have no choice. It'll be either implement native support for Apple Silicon, or drop support for Mac entirely.

I'm sure Apple native support will come eventually. It's just not a priority for them right now. And they've got a while before Intel Mac is completely dead.
