I agree that this is a pretty lackluster response to a pretty sificant change, not to mention a change that is by all accounts a relatively straightforward one for developers. Could you link to the specific feedback? I'm having trouble finding it to up vote.

I don't have the link, sorry

That's going to make things difficult. I've searched Discord feedback for everything I could think of relating to Apple Silicon or M1, and even for Electron to see if the post was under that. I can't seem to find a feedback page for this at all. If someone does find it, please post the link here and I'll gladly add my vote.

I will gladly add my vote too if someone has the feedback link for Discord

At this point trying to get the team actively working on this is useless, given their response...
I guess we'll just have to wait for apple silicon machines to become more popular as, at one point, there'll be enough around to make up a consistent part of macOS machines.

    Still it is very annoying...
Ever major developer has at least started work on the transition, providing at least a rough estomate of when it'll be ready...even Adobe, the masters of slow updates, have provided a rough estimate on when most apps will be ready and for some you can already install the beta.

Would it be so hard to at least make the iOS app usable on MacOS Big Sur?
It is enough that we probably won't get an apple silicon optimized app anytime soon...having the iOS app been blocked from working on macOS by the developers feels like adding salt to an injury...

When you could use the workaround, I installed the Discord iOS app onto my Mac. It was a subpar experience. The Discord mobile apps are completely retooled around touch gestures and long presses. Discord would definitely have to make significant changes to make it function on a mouse based system like macOS. Additionally, I think the company prefers to have the consistency of Electron apps across all desktop OS's.

Discord not giving M1 support a priority is no surprise to me. It makes me wonder if Discord is a Linux / Windows house, as opposed to much of the devs in the Bay Area.

I'm thinking they are Short Staff Due to pandemic or they hit a Wall because of Electron limitation or something,  because there quite a few apps already switching to apple Silicon and other's announcing support at least

it would Calm the people if they say we are adding support for M1 late 2021 or early 2022 instead of leaving us in the Dark just wondering when we are gonna get support for M1.

I’m currently using the iOS and browser versions of discord and so i’m having no issues at all, a native version would be nice so i’m +1 voting for it anyway but I don’t really need it personally.

I’m on the latest version of Big Sur and sideloading works great for me! Any and every ios app I want seems to work well. I wonder why some people seem to have it blocked; i’ve never had any sign of anything being blocked on my system in the UK

I hope Discord gives Apple Silicon support in either Mid 2021, Late 2021 or Early 2022

If Microsoft is to acquire Discord they'll definitely bring out a native version, given their current cross platform commitment. However, there might be an acquisition phase where development isn't as active as we wished. Just a wild guess, but I think that this merger, should it happen, will take some time.

I know that it works on M1 without problems, but the battery drain it causes is unreal. I hope they make an M1 Discord app soon.

I am an M1 user and I am forced to use the browser version. Native x64 drains battery and swapping memory to drive. Extremely a lot :D

1+ yeah, i mean it's one of the last apps that haven't been updated yet for m1 for me, like besides pro apps such as Premiere Pro etc everything else been updated pretty much..

Maybe one can follow the same sort of steps as were used with the Arch User Repository script, discord_arch_electron. Except maybe not, since that also makes the bundled native library files available to it, while this would have to replace those with arm64 versions.

EDIT: Disregard that. The native app also bootstraps itself with 105MB worth of proprietary Node modules, most of which include native modules that are only x86_64.

As I said, either in Mid 2021, Late 2021 or Early 2022, I hope that there is an Apple Silicon version of the Discord app

I see several people say it works fine on apple silicon. Yes it works functionally fine with Rosetta, but it's devouring the battery life. Native M1 +1.

  • Kalos

@asm it doesn't work fine at all. Try sharing your screen, your whole system grinds to a crawl.

Kalos asm it does work with Rosetta 2 (kind of) and I can share my screen without any problem. But Battery life is decreasing significantly and icons, etc. have some kind of wrong rendering sometimes.

For me this is decently no showstopper but it is not practical for more than a transition phase. The worst part about it is that discord doesn't give any comment regarding this topic. I mailed them, asked them via Twitter DM and Tweet and never got any respond. This is kind of sad, I think..

@Kalos, I said it works fine, not perfectly 🤣 also I do not consider sharing screen as essential

Incidentally, Screen Sharing doesn't seem to have as heavy of an impact if you set it to 15fps. It's not the best, but it'll have to do for now, until Discord manages to port their native Node modules to arm64.

Discord is noted to be one of the most resource intensive non-silicon native apps out there. The app makes a lot of writes to the SSD swap on M1 Macs with 8 GB of RAM. There are a lot of youtubers making videos about the excessive SSD usage on M1 Macs and the problem comes down to non-native apps and Discord is one of the worst offenders. Please make a native Apple silicon version soon; its already been 6 months since the introduction of Apple silicon and most developers have updated their apps. Thanks.

discord runs like a laggy pos on m1 currently

  • CreeperFace

I can confirm even though it's somehow usable, it's still pretty laggy compared to android version for example

Wonder if tomorrow there will be more Apple Silicon fuel for the fire ...

  • kalle

    +1 for native Apple Silicon

As someone has already pointed out, apps running through Rosetta render graphics in a weird way leading to jagged edges on icons and emotes. It's a bit laggy, and could overall be a lot better.
