It would be really nice to have that feature so you know if your friend or not actually reads it or not

  If you have concerns whether or not your 'friend' actually reads what you send, you may want to reevaluate your relationship.
  If you want to ensure they read what you send, ping them and wait for a response. Having extra UI to show if a user has read a message is unnecessary at best.
