Option to open channel on notification instead of message
The problem:
When you have the notification options on a channel set to send you a notification for everything on the channel, tapping the generated notification always takes you to the last message on the channel, which, since you're now scrolled to the end of the channel, clears your last read pointer on the channel, losing your place.
In communicating with Discord Support, I'm told this is the intentional behavior, because tapping a notification is supposed to take you to the message being notified about. And of course, on a channel that notifies on everything, that will always be the last message on the channel.
This basically makes the notification almost useless, because to avoid losing my place on the channel, I have to ignore the notification, run the Discord app directly, and navigate to the notified channel, rather than using the notification to get there.
Right now, if you expand the notification, there are options for “Mark Read” and “Reply” that you can do instead of “go to message” which is the default action if you just tap on it.
I can think of a few ways to solve this:
1. To me, I think the behavior ought to be different between if I was notified because of a mention or if I was notified because the channel is set to “everything”. Notifying on a mention should go to the message the notification is about. Notifying on a channel set to “everything” should just go to the channel. After all, when you're notifying on everything, you're just looking for activity on that channel, you don't care which one you got notified about.
2. Alternately, add another option on the expanded notification for “open channel” to let me choose to react to the notification that way when I get it rather than going to the message.
3. Probably the least best option would be a configuration option in the app to choose whether notifications go to the notified message or just to the channel.

If you're finding yourself frustrated with the way notifications behave when it comes to channels, – there might be a solution that can make your experience much smoother.
Here's how you can tackle the issue: When you receive notifications for everything happening in a channel and tap on them, it takes you to the last message in the channel, causing you to lose your reading progress.
Discord actually offers a way to navigate notifications more efficiently. Here's how:
- Expand the Notification: When you receive a notification, expand it by clicking on it.
- Mark as Read or Reply: Instead of tapping on the notification, you'll find options such as 'Mark Read' and 'Reply'.
These options can help you interact with the notification without losing your reading progress. This way, you won't be abruptly taken to the last message, and you can still engage with the content without disruption. cool!
Give it a try and see if it improves your notification experience. Remember, the goal is to enhance your interaction with Discord while maintaining your reading progress – much like keeping a ceiling fan's blades spinning smoothly.
Give this solution a try. If it works for you, heads up!

andres chadwick I pointed those out in my initial comment, so telling me how to use them makes me think you didn't actually read it since I obviously already know about those or I wouldn't have mentioned them. And those don't actually take me to read the channel, either, which was the desired outcome.

pcj, I understand your frustration and your desire to open the channel directly from the notification without losing your place. It seems like the current options provided by Discord's notification system aren't meeting your specific needs. Your point about wanting a more streamlined way to access the channel without losing your reading progress makes a lot of sense. While the existing options offer some interaction with the notification overrides, they still fall short of your desired outcome. It's unfortunate that the behavior isn't aligning with how you envision using notifications. Hopefully, Discord considers feedback like yours to improve the notification system for a better user experience.

Thanks, that's all I'm asking for :)

The current behavior of Discord notifications, especially when set to notify for everything on a channel, has caused some usability issues. When tapping on a notification, it leads to the last message on the channel, inadvertently clearing the last read pointer and disrupting the user's place in the conversation.
While I understand Discord's intention to take users to the message being notified about, it may not be ideal for channels set to "everything." Here are a few potential solutions:
Differential Behavior: Discord could differentiate the behavior based on the type of notification. If it's a mention, it should take you to the specific message. If it's a channel set to notify for everything, it could simply take you to the channel itself. After all, in this case, users are seeking general activity on that channel, not a specific message.
Additional Option: An alternative solution could be adding another option when expanding the notification - "Open Channel." This would allow users to choose to navigate to the channel directly instead of the specific message when they receive a notification.
Configuration Option: While less preferred, Discord could offer a configuration option in the app settings. This option would let users choose whether notifications should take them to the notified message or the channel itself, giving them greater control over their notification experience.
These changes would enhance the usability of Discord's notification system and provide users with more flexibility to tailor their experience to their preferences.

An option to open a channel upon receiving a notification instead of directly opening a message can be advantageous for certain communication platforms. Here's why:
Improved Organization: Opening a channel instead of a specific message allows users to access the broader context of the conversation. This can be particularly useful in group discussions or team collaborations where multiple messages are exchanged.
Facilitates Collaboration: Channels often serve as centralized hubs for discussions on specific topics or projects. By opening a channel, users can quickly join ongoing conversations, share updates, and collaborate with team members without the need to navigate through individual messages.
Enhanced Visibility: Opening a channel provides users with a broader view of the conversation thread, enabling them to see recent messages, announcements, or important updates. This visibility ensures that users are informed and engaged with the latest discussions within the channel.
Encourages Participation: By directing users to channels upon notification, it encourages active participation and engagement within the broader community or team. Users can easily contribute to discussions, share ideas, and stay connected with relevant conversations.
Streamlined Navigation: Channels typically offer a more structured and organized approach to communication compared to individual messages. By opening channels directly from notifications, it streamlines the navigation process and helps users quickly access relevant discussions without unnecessary steps.
Overall, providing an option to open channels on notification instead of messages can enhance collaboration, improve communication efficiency, and facilitate better engagement within communities or team

The feature suggestion on Discord's support forum about opening channels directly from notifications left me a bit puzzled. While it seems like a practical idea to streamline navigation, I wonder about its implications for user experience. Could this really enhance efficiency, or might it add complexity? It's an interesting concept that raises some questions.

Hello, fellow users and developers,
I've been reflecting on the issue of notification behavior in our community, specifically regarding how notifications handle channel messages when set to alert for 'everything.' As many of you have experienced, the current setup, which directs us to the latest message upon tapping a notification, disrupts our engagement by clearing our last read position. This not only diminishes the user experience but can lead to missing important messages in active discussions.
I appreciate the intention behind this design—ensuring users don't miss out on the latest activity. However, it seems this one-size-fits-all approach may not suit the diverse needs of our community. The current options of "Mark Read" and "Reply" in the expanded notification are helpful, yet they don't address the core issue of navigating through messages effectively.
In my view, the solution could be more nuanced:
Adjust Notification Directives Based on Alert Type: If the notification is for a specific mention, it makes sense to jump to that message. However, for general activity alerts (when everything is notified), it would be more user-friendly to direct users to the beginning of unread messages rather than the very last message. This would maintain the context of the conversation without losing track of earlier unread messages.
Introduce a New 'Open Channel' Option in Notification Settings: Adding an option to 'Open Channel' could allow users to enter the channel at their last read message, giving them control over how they catch up with the conversation.
Offer Customizable Notification Navigation Settings: Providing users with the ability to customize their notification actions within the app settings might be a comprehensive solution. This would allow each user to tailor the notification behavior to their preference, whether they wish to be taken to the newest message or to where they left off.

Hello everyone,
I've been closely following the conversation regarding the current notification system's impact on our experience within channels set to notify for "everything." It's clear that the current mechanism, while well-intentioned, sometimes leads to a less than ideal user experience by navigating us directly to the latest message. This often results in losing our place in ongoing discussions, which can be quite frustrating, especially in highly active channels.
As we discuss potential solutions, I believe it's crucial to consider not just the functionality but also the context in which we use these notifications. For example, in creative communities or channels, such as those dealing with video editing or CapCut templates, the continuity of discussion and the ability to track feedback sequentially are invaluable.
To enhance our interaction with the platform, I propose:
Context-Sensitive Navigation: The system should differentiate between different types of notifications—general updates versus direct mentions. For general updates, navigating to the start of unread messages would be more beneficial and less disruptive.
Enhanced Notification Options: Integrating an 'Open Channel at Last Read' option could significantly improve how we engage with content, allowing users to resume their interaction seamlessly.
User Preferences for Notification Management: Allowing users to set preferences on how notifications should behave based on their typical channel activity can tailor the experience to individual needs, enhancing overall satisfaction.
For those interested in a practical application of thoughtful design in user interfaces, particularly in how templates can impact user engagement, I invite you to explore , where we delve into the world of CapCut templates and their role in creating engaging video content.

The issue you're encountering with Discord notifications is indeed frustrating. Here's how each of your proposed solutions could address the problem:
1. Distinguishing between notifications for mentions and notifications for all activity on a channel seems reasonable. This way, tapping on a mention notification would take you directly to the mentioned message, while tapping on a notification for all activity would simply take you to the channel. This solution maintains the distinction between types of notifications and aligns the action with user intent.
2. Adding an option to the expanded notification to "open channel" could provide users with more control over how they interact with notifications. This would allow users to choose whether they want to go directly to the message or simply open the channel to maintain their place. Giving users this flexibility could improve their overall experience with Discord notifications.
3. Introducing a configuration option in the app to choose between going to the notified message or just to the channel would provide users with the most flexibility. This would allow users to customize their notification behavior based on their preferences. However, it's important to consider the potential complexity this option could add to the app's settings and whether it might overwhelm some users.
Overall, any of these solutions could address the issue you're experiencing with Discord notifications. The best approach would depend on factors such as user feedback, ease of implementation, and maintaining a balance between flexibility and simplicity in the app's design. More

Here are a couple of suggestions based on your ideas:
Notification Behavior Based on Alert Type: This makes sense. If the notification is for a specific mention, it could direct you to that particular message. However, if it's alerting for every message on a channel, it might be more useful just to open the channel rather than the latest message. This way, you can catch up from where you last left off without losing your place.
Additional Notification Option: Adding an "Open Channel" option to the expanded notification could offer a convenient way to access the channel directly, giving you control over where you start reading. This seems like a practical and user-friendly addition.
Configurable Notification Directions: While this might be the least preferable, having a setting that lets you decide how notifications should behave (go to the message or just open the channel) could cater to different user preferences.
