I genuinely cannot believe that y'all added a feature that doxxes my discord to my contacts, that is on by default, that doesn't even notify me that it exists.

this 100% this, there are so so so many reasons having this setting on by default could put someone in harms way (being closseted like you said or being in an abusive situation instantly came to mind for me the second i saw it), i cannot begin to fathom how in the hell this was deemed okay to roll out and whoever made the decision to do this should be fired.

Edit to add an afterthought of mine: I don't know what countries this setting was rolled out in but I cannot imagine the outcome if a country where being lgbt+ is still a crime has this setting because i'm assuming that not even a vpn will prevent discord from seeing your contacts if it's enabled by default. I am once again being disgusted by this choice discord have made.

i read by someone else's account that, while it is NOT AT ALL intuitive based off what's given when you bump into this option, this option is applied only when you're finding friends. however, it's still a scare, and there's absolutely no way to glean that information by reading that option. it 100% reads as ‘you can be found on discord by contacts in your phone.’ there was no reason to add this option right there, especially since, *supposedly,* that's already an option that would be off by default.

this is the post i read that information from (links to tumblr)

by no means am i supporting discord in this--it's just one of dozens of examples of the incohesive and infuriating UI changes they've made for no reason other than to just change things up. but i figured it might help to have some amount of comfort.
