Search criteria do not function unless selected from list

I am no longer able to type “from: [user]” to search messages from [user]. If I select the search function from the dropdown, it works as expected and inputs as plain text in the search box

Expected result:

Typing search criteria in the search box filters to the criteria 

Actual result:

Typing search criteria in the search box does not filter to the criteria unless I select the search function from the list
