A comprehensive list of suggestions for improved fluidity of the new UI
I don't necessarily mind the new UI unlike many others, but I do agree that it needs some polishing to increase fluidity and accessibility in certain areas. Here are some suggestions I believe would help a lot:
- Make the currently selected DM channel persistent. This is in my opinion by far the most important suggestion. Swapping back and forth between a DM chat and a server currently keeps taking you back out of the DM chat and requires you to keep tabbing back in from the friends list. Please change this to keep you in the selected DM chat when tab out of the DM screen, much like how tabbing over to the server window puts you back into the last server channel you looked at.
- Make DM markers red again. The new unread markers on DMs are way too subtle. Please use the same red that was used before and is still used to indicate the number of unread DMs on the DM button.
- Add a back button to the channel context menu. The channel / members / media page that you can reach by clicking on the name of a channel does not have a back button. You have to use your phone's back button to get back out of it (edit: I have learned the swipe feature is a thing, but there should still be a clear button for this, as every other page in the app has one).
- Make the swipe to leave the channel context menu easier to use. The swipe to leave this menu does exist, but it's only accessible at the top of the screen and pretty awkward to use because of this. Please make it accessible across the whole length of the screen rather than just the top of it. If needed, only allow swipe to leave when the user is on the leftmost tab of the page (the members list) and could not swipe any further.
- Allow list menus to show media previews again. List menus like the pins in a channel do not display thumbnails for embedded media anymore. Posts with only an embedded media piece do tell you this, but posts with text and an embedded piece of media just display text, concealing the fact that there is an embedded piece of media there. This is a clarity issue.
- Add back old dark mode as a third accessible theme. The newer, darker design, while nice looking, is an eye strain for some people with visual conditions. Please add back the old dark mode, both for accessibility and for people who like the lower contrast more.
All in all I like the new user interface, in my opinion it brings the app together in a more unified and consistent manner than before, with feature access points especially being more consistent and therefor more coherent in general. These six suggestions are not the only suggestions I could make, but they are in my opinion the only six that genuinely matter. If these were implemented it would in my opinion fix all the issues that matter (so far as I've noticed myself), and make the new UI an overall improvement over the old one 🙂

Made an edit after learning that you can swipe back out of the channel context menu, the trigger for it is just located too high to really organically run into.
