when they open my profile they don't think of the discriminator as a part of my name

Also, this is precisely discord's point - users don't realize the numbers are important and it leads to frustration later on.

This isn't about the definition of "username", you brainlet... it doesn't make sense here because Discord's original purpose was to break free from that norm.

Autumn does in fact identify me because I personally identify as "Autumn" and my friends and even random people refer to me as that, not Autumn1234.
You find me by using my identifying name, and a given set of numbers, and in this example it's #1234.
Those numbers are not me, they're a pointer that either I give, or the system gives to you to find specifically me over another "Autumn".

I don't know what kind of users you've encountered but I'm surprised they even managed to download the application.

I'm like actually done here. Not gonna go in this infinite loop of saying the same thing I already have in the past over and over. Either you're trolling or you have negative IQ.

That's cool! You can remain Autumn inside discord, and outside of discord you can now choose how your name will appear, instead of having #1234 tacked on the end.

I don't know what kind of users you've encountered but I'm surprised they even managed to download the application.

That's 40% of discord users. For them this change will make things easier, for most other people this changes nothing, and a negligible amount of people will be angry enough to leave. This is a good thing for discord as a company.

Discord disagrees. It does not identify you.

Those numbers are not me, they're a pointer that either I give, or the system gives to you to find specifically me over another "Autumn".

A unique identifier is called a "username". If "Autumn" does not uniquely identify you, then its not your username.

    THANK YOU FOR TRYING @Autumn
I think you gave all of the reasons why we need to keep the discriminationors

Well, this whole thing has been unraveled and it’s a joke… big surprise! You’re both actually brainless parrots btw, because the whole “half users don’t know their discrim” or “half of friend requests fail” aren’t proven statistics (and frankly, literally cannot be measured correctly in any capacity) and was just the suits pulling your strings.

you more than likely will not get your preferred names, so have fun trying to find something to ✨embellish✨ your god awful usernames.

That link is nothing surprising? Of course people who bring in the most money for discord will get priority, that's basic business. Rolling things out badly is also something companies love to do.

We can't really know about the percentage of friend requests failing, true, but I'd be inclined to believe it. Both times I wanted to add people I met IRL they didn't know they also have to give me their discriminator.

And frankly personally I don't care too much about my username and will most likely go with my current discriminator added at the end. But it's nice to have a choice and it's why I support the change.

Although I do not like the idea to remove it because I hate having to pick me username and having it already stolen.

I see a lot of people don't like the idea either, and yet...Discord is in the process of doing it. So hopefully you are happy for this change. Really shows how Discord listens. Might share this forum with Discord however though.

To the Discord developers, the upload image function doesn't work as when I upload an image, it just shows as a black block in the editor and when I save/update; nothing shows up.

I got what I wanted and let's remember thats what's important. Nobody cares about you guys and your "rational and logical arguments" or what you want. I don't want to hear any of it.

I’ll make sure I get your name before you do then ☺️

Then you’ll really complain about having numbers in your username

oh shit the mask came off

  • Icey Ash, Water Stew & Water Sam

im sure even if i tried, there's someone with the same name, whose account is older then mine. so even if i did do that, i would probably end up with the numbers, and they would have to chose from a pile of names

if you really like the name you have so much, check to see if someone else has it, cause im sure someone who has that name has an account thats older then yours

Seems like good proof that you guys don't actually check the profiles of who posts and impersonating is easy when names don't need to be unique.

then don't complain when someone gets your name before you could because their account was older then yours

The other poochyena isn't me. Check the profiles.

yah, sure would be handy if there was a way to differentiate between the true and the fake account by something more than the random string of numbers in the profile URL

  • poochyena

This is exactly why we need unique usernames and no display names.

This has gotten out of hand, and it made me realize, I got SO hung up on the definition of "username" that i ignored everything that you all were saying. We all have different priorities, and while i dont personally care what my username will be, I now understand that to a lot of you it is a BIG deal, and a frustrating change.

I know I can be stubborn, and so can you guys, but I hope we can move past this and be friends. I feel especially bad for being so impossible with Autumn - you were so patient with me and I just refused to accept any of it, I'm sorry.

ive thought about this before, and yes, this will probably be the case:

the point of the discriminators is so every name is unique, there still can be 10 joe's, but there's still a way to tell this joe from that joe, without the discriminators, there will be joe, then joe_name and then joe1, joe2, joe3, joe4, joe5, joe6, joe7, and joe8
if even ONE joe changes their name, the other one gets their name
if joe changes their name to joemama, and joe6 wants their name without the number, and they can become "joe" they take that chance, and now "joemama" wants to change it back to joe. the original joe wants to now become "joe7" but there's already a joe7, so now the original joe messages joe7 and joemama tells joe7 to become joe64 or something, cause he wants the number 7. joe7 doesnt like that, so he tells him "no, you become joe64, im not changing my name because you want it" and then bam, now theres a war between two people who want the name joe
sure, they can change their display name, but what if they dont want it as their display name? maybe they want it to be their username, and if they had the discriminator, they would all be "joe" without there being a war between joe's

    0
  • Asd

With the discriminator system, there's no "joe", there are joe0001-9999. None of the joes in your example get what they want, a username of just joe. When they share their profile outside discord, they have to use "joe#1267" or whatever they were randomly assigned. Inside discord, they already use their display name, which is "joe". With the system discord is moving to, at least one joe gets what they really want, and other joes have more freedom to choose an alternative, and they still all can be displayed as "joe".

but then the issue i just explained happens, the oldest account named joe for some reason decides "hey, im gonna change my name to joemama cause its funny" and now joe7 gets joe, and then ect
at least joe and joe7 wont fight that joe became joemama and joe7 wont become joe64

  • Icey Ash, Water Stew & Water Sam

what im trying to say is that i know if my name gets taken, im messaging the person, and asking them if they can do something about it, im not going to say to them "change it, i want my name" id ask them to change their name by putting the underscore or something, because i dont want my username then to be @iceyashwaterstewwatersam because thats wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too long, and its already hard enough to say it alone. the name "Icey Ash, Water Stew & Water Sam" would become my display name, and "@iceyash" or "@icey_ash" would become my username, or as i have on instagram, just to message someone "iceyashistaken" cause it is

but then the issue i just explained happens, the oldest account named joe for some reason decides "hey, im gonna change my name to joemama cause its funny"

Then change the display name? Refusing to use display names for their purpose and instead changing the unique username (knowing that opens it up for others to take) is just being pointlessly obstinate.

If you think that it's fine to have the discriminator at the end of the username - why not just add it when you switch to the new usernames? The difference between now and then would literally only be a lack of the "#". And your preferred name of "Icey Ash, Water Stew & Water Sam" would be displayed everywhere on discord, not only in servers where you manually change it.

Unrelated, but I appreciate that you argue the point and not just go into insults, unlike many others.

there's not enough space to add them

thats why i have to use "&" instead of the word "and"
there's not enough space to put that, cause i tried when i first came up with the name about 3 years ago, and i havent changed my name since

    1
  • Asd

Didn't you want "iceyash" as your username? Add the discriminator to that and you're good to go.
