Get rid of the four digit tag numbers at the end of usernames
This is so frustrating and the reason I took so long to join discord. The useless random numbers at the end of usernames.
When someone irl asks me for my social media, I tell them everything except for discord. Why? Because I can't remember than random 4 digit code at the end. The exact same thing happens when I ask other people. It has happened at least twice, I asked for their username and they just give me their username, not the last 4 digits, since they didn't choose the numbers, and thus, don't remember (or even know its a thing).
No other social media does this, and it makes adding people extremely difficult. There isn't even a reason for it that I can think of.

How am I supposed to add friends by their tags if they have no idea what their tag is? So dumb.

A moment of silence for all the braincells that were lost while replying to poochyena and reading the thread, you will be remembered by the remaining braincells... RIP

No, poochyena, let's say there were no discrimators.
There should be thousands of members called "john."so this is what it would look like.
John
John
JohnYou can't tell the difference between each "John." So if you want to change #1412, by getting discord nitro. Eventually they might even use 5 digit discrimators, so get used to it.

I don't understand how someone can rant about 4 numbers for 6 months. If you don't like it don't usd discord, no one is forcing you to use it.
4 -
How am I supposed to add my friend if they have the same name as a hundred other people?
If there were no discriminators, only one person could have a username which would be much worse than remembering 4 numbers. I saw you saying that there's no display names but the entire point of the discriminator system is that you don't need a separate name!2 -
can this post be locked or taken down? i can't believe people are still replying to this, like the post is dumb as hell

OH COME ON I'M STILL RECEIVING NOTIFICATIONS FOR THIS DUMB POST

I'm so sad I missed this thread in its heyday. poochyena is of course completely right. Usernames are unique, since they need to uniquely identify users (at login). If they don't uniquely identify a user (at login), they aren't usernames, but something else. In this case a display name, I guess.
As a matter of fact, your username is actually your email address, since that is what you use to log in. Simple as that. Take this from a software developer of ~20 years.
So Discord, please stop calling things the wrong names. "Username" is an old and recognized term meaning a very specific thing. No need to re-define it, it just sparks confusion like in this thread. A display name is not a username. Just call it "Display name" like every other service ever. Keep the tag if you feel people are too stupid to just use the email address when adding friends (which has never been a problem before...)

It's 4 numbers, if it's that much effort to remember it, why don't you just take a screenshot of it or write it in a note on your phone? Christ, first world problems much?

Incredible. This is incredible. I don’t believe this exists. I will try to get Jon Bois to make a YT video on this forum.

I'm a software developer and I confirm that having a username + a number is stupid. Many people already have unique names, and they don't need the number.
Discord should allow users to add friends JUST with the username. And if there's more people with the name, then display the number. Many times just by looking at the picture you know who is your friend. Having to say and write the number is very inconvenient and unnecessary.
If the problem they are trying to solve is to let people use duplicate usernames, adding a number at the end doesn't solve it 😂 because you are forcing them to change the username. It's the same as if you tell them to add the numbers themselves to make the username unique. But letting them chose the number is a better option because they can easily remember it.
This feature is a bad design. Discord should seriously consider fixing it.-8 -
youre telling me that it would be less confusing for numbers to randomly appear after so many of an account name exists rather than just having numbers from the start? what about this makes it such a bad design? its obviously worked for everyone for 5 years now, why change it now? "If the problem they are trying to solve is to let people use duplicate usernames, adding a number at the end doesn't solve it 😂 because you are forcing them to change the username." this sentence literally does not make any sense. how are they forcing you to change the username?

I didn't explain myself clearly.
I suggested that to search a user you shouldn't need the full username and number. In any other site, you can search users by parts of their username. In Discord, typing the number is mandatory, and it's pointless most of the time.
The numbers would be there from the account creation, but you wouldn't need it unless someone has a duplicate username.
You're right, it works, but it's inconvenient and could be improved.
Regarding the last paragraph, maybe with an example, it's clearer:
If I want my username to be "superman", discord will attach "#1234" at the end, making my username in practice "superman#1234". If I want to share my username I can't say my username is "superman", because they won't be able to find me. They also need the number, so I'll have to say "superman#1234". This is why, in practice, they are forcing you to change your username.
And if you think about it, it's the same as if I set my username to "superman2020", because "superman" isn't available. In the end, if I want to share my username I'll have to say "superman2020", and it's the same as saying "superman#1234", but better because I chose the number and I'll remember it better.
Just letting people find users by the username alone would stop annoying for me. Because my username is unique and saying the number always is a nonsense in my case.-6 -
This is still rly funny
