We need a marker to know when a message has been deleted, as right now, if someone responds to a message that would then get deleted, other people may not know what that person was responding to.
For example:
If i say something that would get deleted by either myself or a moderator, then:
box o' shibes: square up
goes into:
box o' shibes: [message deleted by user] or
box o' shibes: [message deleted by moderator.]
The marker would be compact and not have the user's pfp, as that would take up space.
To go even further, mods can choose to add a reason:
box o' shibes: [message deleted by moderator: violation of rule 4a]
This would make discord less confusing when you first join a chat and scan to find context.

Nah. If I delete a message I deleted it on purpose. Being called out that you may have changed your mind on something, that’s annoying. It’s nice that discord is one of the places that don’t do that. Only useful if it’s removed by a mod, but shouldn’t be if you remove it yourself. To make it less confusing, it can point out that a message has been deleted but not include any mention of the user. Because again, if I decide to delete something, I want to do so quietly. Not announce it for the world. What’s the point in that case.
