Standardize the Scaling of Emoji Sizes for Pixel Art Emojis
The scaling of emojis is all over the place and it really tarnishes pixel art emojis that are made to exact size. Pixel art can be upscaled by positive integers (1x, 2x, 3x, etc) to maintain the pixel aesthetic without creating distortion. The current size standard for custom emojis is 128x128. Prior to the most recent update, a standalone emoji displayed at 32x32, which is a perfect 4x scale to 128x128, allowing for pixel art to remain intact. With the most recent update this display size increased to 48x48, which does not scale appropriately (it's 2.67x) which distorts the artwork. Additionally, the in-line emojis (coupled with text) display at 22x22 which also does not scale correctly from 128x128 (5.82x scale).
My suggestion is simple:
- Make these emoji sizes scale uniformly by positive integers so that pixel art emojis do not get distorted.
Alternatively...
- Allow for a separate image to be uploaded for each display size of an emoji so the uploader can manually handle the scaling
- Or let servers select the display size for emojis in their server settings.
