New update auto activating speakerphone - why?

Since the new mobile update whenever I join a call it defaults to speakerphone, even if I have earphones plugged in. This happens if I get disconnected and it reconnects in my pocket also which is not exactly ideal in public having my call broadcast from the speakers instead of earphones. I contacted support and was told that this is actually an intended feature? There is currently no way to disable it which makes using the app to call a pretty bad experience for me right now.

    There absolutely used to be a way to default to either speakerphone or not. It did not have that feature, then it did, and on my last update it erased that and the option is nowhere to be seen in preferences now. Why was this deleted? I agree that we should have the ability to choose our own default.
