There can be different solutions to your problem.
1. You may need to add him as a friend right click on his name and press "Add friend"
2. You may need to enable notifications you can do this by going to your settings -> Notifactions -> Enable unread message badge (turn this until you see a light blue.)

This is really a thing you should ask customer support about, if it's being an issue, or report in the bug-testing server.
But in addition to the person's above suggestions, there's a couple more things you can check for.
3. You may have muted them by mistake, or on purpose and just forgot. Right-clicking their username or the DM in the DM list should allow you to see the details about if they're muted or not.
4. You might have the DM open on another device, which could cause the messages to be automatically marked as read there because it's reading them.
5. Maybe you're just switching out at bad times, that happens sometimes and makes Discord think you read them when you didn't. It happens to me occasionally. But given it's happening with every message, this probably isn't the case.
