Addition of HWID bans

Discords current method of permanently banning user's is based off of an IP address. Any device with said IP address on the banned list is no longer able to join a server however this method is ineffective. Someone could just hop on a VPN or if a user has a router with a dynamic IP address, they can ban evade and bypass really really easily. A potential solution is the addition of HWID bans (Hardware Identification bans) this will ban anyone with the banned Motherboard ID (or any other part in the device) thus making it extremely harder for people to bypass a ban.

There is an offender in a server I moderate who has been ban evading for nearly THREE YEARS. It's gotten so ridiculous because there's very little we can do to stop him since each time we ban him he just joins back on another account with a different IP address. Hopefully a HWID banning solution will fix the issue.

I think this would be helpful for bigger servers for sure.

There is actually another problem with the IP ban that is the fact that VPN services typically use shared IP's so the banned IP could be supporting multiple discord users only one of which is the bad actor. As someone who frequently uses public wifi I can honestly say a VPN is often required to bypass arbitrary port blocking or improperly configured access points to even get a usable connection to the internet. I think getting rid of IP bans in favor of HWID bans is the way to go here as its a unique machine identifier and will not end up with a IP ban blocking large numbers of legitimate VPN users by mistake

This would be a good idea, however it wouldn't work out too well since:

    • Some people use Discord in the web browser and the web browser discord can't detect motherboard ids
    • There's a lot of people who use Discord on mobile

If this was implanted, then Discord would have to only be a desktop application

A web app might be able to get the MAC address of the active NIC which is a hardware ID. It is easier to spoof than a MB id but its better than a IP

Not very sufficient. Hardware id changes with when you change hardware. VM and emulators have their own id. Unique for every device. You can ban evade with a vm. Also macadress are worse. They are much easier to spoof. Windows has litterally a function to randomise macaddress everytime it makes a wifi or ethernet connection

Well, as a pevious user said, the web version cannot detect hardware ids so this would only work is discord was a desktop only app
