Mobile call screen disappearing is so annoying

The feature to protect you from pressing buttons with your ear when in a call is so annoying. It doesn't register correctly when the phone is held to your ear or just sitting flat and you could be sitting there trying to hit the speaker phone button but the screen keeps going blank preventing you. It just causes more trouble than it saves for me.

  There should at the very least be an option to turn it off.
