Onboarding, Server Invite Background and Server Invite Embeds
As a server owner something that has bothered me ever since the invite embed banners were added (on their own a stellar feature that I think makes it much easier to join servers, kudos for that) is the fact that it uses the same image as the browser background.
The issue is the difference in aspect ratio. The recommended aspect ratio is 16:9, which is of course by far the most common monitor aspect ratio and makes perfect sense for a full screen splash image.
The problem appears when you compare it to the image used for invite embed banner, which as far as I can tell uses 27:4 aspect ratio (this is not stated anywhere, I had to inspect element the embed in browser to come to this conclusion).
This results in one of the images being practically useless and frankly ugly to the point of making the experience worse rather than contributing to it.
My server primarily gains new users from within discord (Discovery and other servers), so I was able to largely ignore the browser splash screen and prioritize aspect ratio for the embed banner until now but the new Onboarding feature means all new users will see it, bringing up the issue for me.
I suggest resolving this problems in one or more of the following ways:
- Add support for separate invite embed banner image
- Add a cropping tool (similar to the one used for profile pictures) to crop each of the images individually in a way that keeps them all appropriately visible.
- Add a toggle on each of the places that use the image to instead use the default discord behavior.
I am unable to attach images in the feedback form, so here are screenshots illustrating the issue on my server:
