Organizing and fixing the positions of chats in the Direct Messages list
TL;DR I want the option to organize the chats in the Direct Messages list in alphabetical order, or the option to pin chats to keep them at the top of the Direct Messages list.
Categories/Folders would be nice too, but they're more of an afterthought.
As a preface, I mainly use Discord for 1-on-1 Direct Messages as I am much more comfortable talking 1-on-1 than in a group. I am also a part of some Discord servers, but I don't talk in them very often, so this is from the perspective of someone who mainly uses DMs on Discord instead of servers.
I find that the current default setting in the Direct Messages list (where it just bumps the newest chat to the top) is quite annoying when actively chatting with more than 1 person, because I often receive a new message from my other contacts which moves the chat I'm about to press, often causing me to click the wrong chat and sometimes send messages to the wrong people.
Basically, I want a way to fix the chats in place so I don't have to play chase-the-chat every time lots of new messages roll in at the same time.
I have three ideas for how this could be solved:
1) Alphabetical chats
2) Pinning chats
3) Categories/Folders for chats
The above ideas are listed in order of how difficult they seem to implement, so I would at least like to get the "1) Alphabetical chats" option if the other ones are too hard or not worth the time to setup.
(Please note that I'm not well versed in Discord settings. I looked through them a few times and Googled a bit, but did not find any options for what I'm looking for. If there are settings which do what I am talking about, please tell me right away.)
1) Option to organize Direct Messages list alphabetically
I would at minimum like an option to organize the chats listed in the Direct Messages section in alphabetical order, just like how the Friends list is organized.
This would keep the chats in my Direct Messages list fixed in place so the chats don't keep jumping around as new messages come in.
For me personally, I would be completely fine with just having simple alphabetical ordering because I don't have enough chats to go off screen, but people who have hundreds of chats in their Direct Messages list would probably find the "pinning" and "categories" ideas more useful.
2) Pinning specific chats to the top of the Direct Messages list
The second idea is the option of pinning certain chats to stay at the top of the Direct Messages list in a fixed order.
For these pinned chats, I think having them be re-organizable by drag-and-drop or something similar would be useful, or they could simply be ordered alphabetically.
What I would like to avoid is having a pinned chats section that also just bumps the newest messages to the top as that would completely fail to solve the problem I'm having with the Direct Messages list in the first place.
3) Categories/Folders for Direct Messages list
The third idea is the inclusion of categories/folders which we can put chats into. This would let us organize our chats into categories like "Importants", "Memers", "Check when I have time", etc.
For this idea, simple alphabetical ordering will not be enough since you would want a folder like "Importants" to be at the top of the list, rather than having it appear below the "Check when I have time" folder.
I think there are a lot of design aspects to think about for categories, so it should probably have its own post if people have ideas about how categories should be implemented.
What are you thoughts about this? Am I just overlooking a Discord setting which does what I talked about?

I'm having the exact same issue and situation. I prefer chatting in DMs than servers, and I accidentally send the wrong messages to the wrong people since the DMs jump around. I was just thinking that a fixed alphabetical order list would be much more preferable than the current system.

yeah I also agree. I would also prefer having an alphabetical dm list.

I dont understand why this isnt a feature. It seems like a rather basic requirement to me.
