Dear Discord. It's been a few days. I still think your new UI sucks.
You specified in your testing server that you wanted people to give your new chat UI nonsense a few days before deciding how they felt about it. Well guess what?
It's been a few days.
And you know what else?
I still don't like it. At. All.
I tried to get used to it. I really gave it an honest chance. But after a day, I had to set the Accessibility Slider to 24px because they were just too close and I couldn't deal with it. It was giving me a headache and making me feel very claustrophobic and nauseated, and I know it's doing the same for a ton of other people. Now, at 24px? It's tolerable. I can use the client without those negative reactions. Mostly, anyway.
It's still uncomfortable to look at. And I still hate how close the bottom message is to the text box. I don't want things to feel compact. I don't want sleek. I want a nice, cozy UI, not this crowded jumble of text. It's squashed. You had it right before this new UI. And I miss the dividing lines, too. They were nice, subtle, easy. Can you please tell me if anyone was actually asking for this? And if they were, couldn't you have Cozy, Compact, and Slim, or something? We could have three options.
The bright red New Messages line? I still hate it. Please at least make it a little more subtle. And move the New Message text over to the left, so it's with all the other text I want to read. If you're going to keep it, it cannot be Neon Red. Especially not on Dark Theme. It's not as jarring as it was right at first, but it bothers me every. Single. Time. Every time I see it, I don't like it. Or you know what? Maybe make its brightness an option. Would that be so hard? I really liked how it was before. It stood out enough for me to see it, but not too much. It wasn't trying to absorb every speck of my attention like this new one. Red is a warning color. It alarms our brains. Especially a super saturated bright red. It looks like something is wrong.
And my least favorite new feature of the bunch is that awful reaction bar that pops up on hover over of every single message. The darkened message highlight, I could probably live with, but maybe it should be a little more subtle, or just be subtle lines at the top and bottom of the message. That would separate it nicely without drawing too much attention to it. But that reaction bar is just beyond terrible. You try to highlight some text? Too bad, reaction bar! Wanna just click the normal "Add whatever react I choose" button? Too bad, reaction bar strikes again! Maybe I just want my cursor on the right side while I'm reading over messages. Or maybe I have trouble with reading all this samey text and I want to use my cursor to mark my place. Well guess what? Big surprise, that stupid reaction bar gets in the way again. I don't need a "Quick React" function. How fast do you think chats are going??? And if they're going so fast I can't react normally... do reactions even matter? They won't even get seen. All this bar does is pop up in the way and make me add accidental reactions, and take away my ability to just nicely view text. Was the previous method really so hard? And if you refuse to take out this reaction bar that appears on hover over, at least give us an option to disable the Quick React part. I could live with it if that part was gone, but as is, this is way too bulky.
And, I tried using the Quick Reacts. I didn't like it. It just feels wrong. So maybe some people like it, but for the many of us that don't, please let it be an option. And let those who choose to use it decide what reactions they want in there. Your "Most Used Emoji" tracker isn't that great, and we might not want the same emojis for reactions.
Honestly, would it really be so bad to at least give us some options? You've shown you're more than capable of having some display options. Why not more? Why is that so hard? Lots of people don't like this update. I can tolerate certain parts, but I really miss the old UI. It was perfect. It was nice and cozy. It fit a lot of stuff without being cramped or crowded. It wasn't trying to be "Super Sleek" or whatever this one thinks it's going for. This one feels clunky and unnecessarily cramped. Imagine a house where you have small hallways and walkways to get around, but there's space and you can reach stuff, and walk without crashing into things. Now picture the same house, but there's boxes upon boxes everywhere, there's barely any room to sit or move because it's so cluttered, and to get anywhere, you usually have to either squeeze through boxes or climb over them. Pictured it? Good. That's the comparison between these two UIs. The old one is decently spacious, but cozy. This new one is just cramped and makes me feel claustrophobic, especially prior to adjusting the spacing.
Overall, my review of this new UI is 0/10 stars. I am not impressed. I wasn't happy with it on day one, and I'm still not happy with it. It introduced nothing new that was good and removed lots of old stuff that I liked. New isn't always better. Sleeker and slimmer aren't always better. You had a good UI. Stick with it. Add extra options. Take care of legitimate UI issues like more themes and better quality themes. But please, in the future, don't just drastically change the UI like this. Get something good. Stick to it. You are not going to make it somehow magically much better by just throwing a great big glob of goo at the wall and waiting to see if it sticks or not.
Please, bring back the old UI. Even if it's just as options, bring it back. We miss it.
Even though I used reactions before, I've disabled them completely just to minimize the impact of that stupid mouse-over quick react bar. I can't believe that actually made it to live without any sort of options to tweak it.10
This would be a really easy fix if they'd just... put up a rollback download.
But nope! Can't do that!8
everything was fine before the update, i purposley didnt close discord for over a week to avoid this update, everything is so akward, why did we need a different unread message system? we didnt, it was fine before. it feels like youre trying to force me onto mobile with this, is this your big brain tumbler strat discord? make changes that cause the people who use you go away? force us onto mobile so you dont have the update pc?7
I also tried my best to not restart discord to avoid it, but it crashed trying to stream a game. There are currently no known ways to revert it back the way it was. That's why my discord app is the same version that was installed in 2016. It's my PC, I should be able to choose what updates download. But discord takes that freedom to choose away from you, and rams whatever they want down your throat.3
better discord has a theme that reverts the ui almost completely
it's not *perfect* but it's very close.
just google the better discord library, it's not hard to find it in there. sort by date uploaded.
i'd link directly but i'll probably get punished because hurrdurr betterdiscord against tos0
