Drect Messaging other users

jackasaurus.
I have this situation where anytime I want to DM a user in any server I am in....first I need to send them a friend request and wait for them to accept. If I do not do this...i get that message saying user has messages turned off or you are not in a server with the user. This happens to every user I try to DM. I have spoken to other users and they can all simply DM anyone without first having to add them as a friend I have looked through all my settings and cannot find anything that could turn on or off to change this. Please...any advice on how I can change this...would be great.

    You have to change your settings to allow non-friends to DM you.

    Open your User Settings, then open "Privacy & Safety" and set "Allow Direct Messages from server members." to on. A popup will appear asking if you want this to apply to all existing servers, hit yes otherwise it will only take in effect in new servers.
