This would also help control some of the poaching BS that happens. People join one discord, then DM everything a link to another discord to steal people.

This permission already exists for individual members. You can set whether members of a particular server are allowed to message you directly without being friends first.

I see no reason to create a copy of a system that already exists.

The whole idea is to set a server-wide default to help stop phishing scams etc.

It's true that some individual members may have turned off DMs from users who aren't friends, but most Discord users to not have this setting enabled.

Instead of being tied to individual users, it's tied to server roles, prevent accounts from SENDING DMs to people they aren't friends with, without the required permission on the server.

stuckatsixpm So you would like to do what exactly? Turn it on for them even if they don't want it turned on?

Server owners don't need to control who can DM each other and I'm against giving server owners tools that can in any way effect user experience outside of the server itself.

It is not for you to decide who can DM each other. Individuals already have control over this.

Your idea also doesn't take into account people who share multiple servers together and what happens when one server doesn't use the feature you're requesting.

It's frankly ridiculous the amount of authority and control server owners want to exert on other discord members outside of the server they control.

If people want to DM, they can add the other person as a friend.

Server owners have no control over that.

Edit: For context, I participate and admin in several servers with 1000+ members. In all of the servers, we constantly get large numbers of self-botted user accounts joining and sending scam DMs. There is no way to stop this. The attacks are generally targeted to financially focused servers.

Having a restriction on sending DMs would prevent this. It's a restriction that users could bypass by being friends, and users can be unfriended with the click of a button.

Again, you haven't addressed what happens when two members share multiple servers together, and one server doesn't use the DM verfication feature you're requesting.

Is your server suppose to supersede the settings of other servers? Why?

No, a server I'm in should not have the right to even decide this, The individual does, and the individual can turn off dms, this has no logical basis, other than stopping 'poaching', there are alternative ways that can be implemented/done to stop this sort of 'attack', discord im sure is working on it.

    tl;dr would never happen.

I see everyone's point, however...turning OFF DMs only affects NEW servers you join. It doesn't affect ones you are already in. (Let's fix that?) Also, its not server specific. What if I'm in a Pokemon server and I don't mind DMs from those people, but I'm ALSO in a NSFW server, and I DON'T want DMs from those people? (Let's fix that?)

So either, give the Server Owner to Option to Turn Off DMs from member to member (clearly if they are in multiple servers together, ALLOW should superceded DISALLOW) OR
Give individuals the ability to turn off DMs on a SERVER BY SERVER basis, OR
Give individuals the power to turn off DMs AFTER having joined a server.

    OR all of the above?

Yezragirl  "however...turning OFF DMs only affects NEW servers you join."

You are incorrect, you can set this setting server by server after joining. You can change whether they are on or off by default when you join, and you can also change the setting again afterwards by right clicking the server icon in your list of servers and opening privacy settings.

"What if I'm in a Pokemon server and I don't mind DMs from those people, but I'm ALSO in a NSFW server, and I DON'T want DMs from those people? (Let's fix that?) "

Right click the pokemon server, go to privacy settings. Set it to allow DMs from server members. Right click NSFW server, restrict DMS. There you go, it's fixed.

"Give individuals the ability to turn off DMs on a SERVER BY SERVER basis"

You already have access to this function, everyone does. There are two ways to change DM settings, one is through the clients privacy settings which simply changes the default setting when joining a new server. The other way is as I've already mentioned, right click that server and open the privacy settings.

There's a reason I'm against the feature in the first place, and it's because individual members already have all the power and tools needed to police this behavior. It doesn't need to be handled by server owners, nor should it be.

Just because you're not aware of a function does not mean that function doesn't exist.
