On the possibility of NFT integration

As a long time user of Discord who had at first resisted migrating from Skype and has now found a home among the many communities formed on the platform and grown accostumed to the tools provided to connect with friends, I am very saddened to see that the app has fallen so low as to seriously consider the integration of NFTs and blockchain technology.

This feels almost cartoonish to have to be stated so plainly, but I, like any normal human being, care about the environment. I refuse to believe that a few unique pictures attached to online transactions using virtual money is worth utilizing so much energy it surpasses the energy needs of a city, greatly impacting the environment, at a rate more alarming and worrying than anything we have seen before.

As an artist who regularly takes commissions, I am disgusted by the rising trend of the rich and wealthy splurging on virtual commodities simply for their pleasure when many artists would gladly draw much more highly customized and personalized art, for much cheaper and without even a fraction of the environmental impact that these NFTs do. And by proxy, I am disgusted by the mere thought that this platform would entertain the integration of NFTs.

I have never used nitro, but you can bet I never will now, and I will encourage everyone I know to drop it, as well as stand with anyone who wishes to stop putting any money into it, and if it comes to it, I may leave altogether, taking along many of the communities who will also stand with me.

You, the people pulling the strings, though, have a chance to do different. You can either take a step back, show that you do listen to your userbase, or you can instead cater entirely to NFTbros, becoming hostile to everyone else and therefore known as "that app that used to be good but is now overrun by cryptobros".

I think from this post you can tell which one I would like, but, hey, it's your choice.

As someone who cancelled my Discord Nitro subscription after 16 months, I wholeheartedly agree with you. This is not the platform and community I have grown to love so dearly, especially since the pandemic hit. Discord was my home away from home and now I feel left out in the cold. Discord won't be getting another penny of Nitro out of me until they make a statement AGAINST crypto/NFTs.
