Better #info channels
There's a common use pattern of having one dedicated channel set up as a locked info channel with static text. Using the common text channel for this purpose is clumsy though, for the following reasons:
- Length limits on individual messages - longer text in an info channel needs to be broken up to several messages and if there's a need to edit one of the messages on top causes problems when the edit would exceed the character limit, and you can't insert a new message in between existing messages. You'll have to redo the whole channel from sratch.
- People can only edit their own messages - potential edits to the info channel content have to be made by the person who originally created those messages, nobody else can do it, without wiping the messages and creating the channel from scratch again. This makes moderator's and admin's work harder.
Proposed solution:
- Static text channels. A new channel type, that's not for messages, but a single text block with no character limit (or sufficiently large limit).
- Multiple people (admins, mods, etc.) can edit the text content wiki style. Control who can edit the text via permissions. (Potential problems with simultaneous edits could be solved simply by locking the channel while someone's editing, or with more effort by collaborative editing, like in google docs etc.)
- For extra features, implement the rest of the Markup syntax: headings, horizontal rule, lists, images, and links with title text
