no cellphone to verify
there should be an alternative way to verify for those who do not have a cell phone.

The security risk of giving your cell number to online services is well documented. The list of online services I don't use because they want my cell number is huge. Looks like I won't be using Discord. I only wanted to use it because there's a support forum on Discord for TrueNAS. Now I'm begging TrueNAS to abandon Discord.

This phone verification is a dangerous thing for many users. It poses a great risk to all of us who use it. Though the fact that all you choose to say is go buy a cell phone for this issue does not help. There needs to be other ways to verify. Due to the fact that some like myself do not have the money to afford a cell phone due to budget restraints. Even if I could afford one I could not keep a number due to the budget it still does not seem appropriate to enforce this. It locks out probably 75 Percent of your users due to them having to keep a number and then losing a phone or getting a new number. The requirement to have people use this is absurd and should add to the list of things that discord has problems. Though it seems like none of you seem to care. I do not see why you do not have other verification systems in place or a alternate for those who do not. I only just started having these issues a few months ago. Trying to get into several servers and being unable to contact anyone about this in the server to find an alternate verification method. Please do add a secondary verification method even if it needs to be a timed thing to activate or change it for those who do not have a phone to use. since most people do not have a way to receive texts at all. The next generation is not likely going to be much better than this one. So do find a way to work this out.

Several servers are locked out to me, because of the cell phone number foolishness. We NEED a computer based option!

I found that if you use a different number to verify (maybe a friends or something) it will let you log in and then just change the number or delete, but you can’t change back to the number that was there before (if you had one). But you will be logged back into the account 👍🏾 just had this problem for 2 hours

4 years with this same issue and not even one single answer from Discord about this. Umbelivable man...

Dear Discord,
Rather than using email verification and captcha for security, you force everyone to use phone numbers, not to keep people safe, but only to datamine them whilst offering them the illusion of protection and security. You did not combat the scammers and hackers, you made the issues worse.
Your Trust and Safety team has done nothing to help and protect your users. You're fully aware of that but you'd rather worry about bloating the platform with useless features nobody asked for, preach about politics, create low quality updates, treat your users like garbage and datamine them than actually allowing Discord to be a decent quality VoIP platform.

Discord absolutely DOES NOT need to access your phone number for any reason. The only reason they are doing it is because, like any other corporation that demands a phone number, they make more money grouping your info with a phone number when they sell it. This change is ridiculous and people should not stand for it.

I agree. I have recently ditched the traditional cell phone too. For a number of reasons. Having a requirement to share something I do not have to have is ridiculous. Statements about “safety” is also nonsense. My bank does have the legitimate reason to verify my identity and, in fact, I want them to _really_ verify the identities of their customers. An online forum used by multiple 3rd parties to exchange the messages….no, sorry, you are not entitled to that level of personal information. You are not a stock broker, you are not the bank, you are not the government. If the choice is between me getting a cellphone just to make Discord happy vs me using Discord, then bye-bye Discord.

i also have the same problem as well, wasn’t as bad in 2021 but now everyone basically needs a phone number from a physical sim or esim for every account they own
if someone has like 10 accounts they would end up paying for 5 phones and then dual sim for each of them phones because of this stupid requirement that everyone has to have a phone number to use discord
i have had this problem since 2021 when i decided to have more than 1 account
