The not-so-great user blocking feature.

    everything about this
this feature has been half-baked for a while
i see the problem with hiding a message completely, where it could make conversations harder to contextualize
**but** the current implementation is still as, if not more, obstructive than the message itself
and arguably it's not that hard to realize that people are talking to a user that you have blocked

and an extra bonus would be to have more granularity over blocking in general
and not just eliminating dms, or hiding messages
but also being able to mute certain phrases, both on an individual user level and on a server-wide moderation scope

basically something *like* twitters feature set would be great
it's a different platform, but i feel some of it can translate over to discord
or atleast inspire better implementations of the current system

preferable: a total rework of the current system
acceptable: a ui overhaul of how the messages appear in a chat
the latter is still not a complete solution tho

Also, there is also the question of hiding *your* messages on a server from someone.

If I've blocked someone for being toxic, I'd be worried they're taking what I'm saying and twisting it when talking to others, or taking a 'well, they didn't correct me when I clarified so obviously I'm right' attitude taking advantage of the fact I can't see what they're saying.

ALSO, in addition to completely blocking people, it would be nice if there was just a quick 'mute this person on this channel' toggle of some sort, for when you're trying to have an on-topic conversation and that one dude won't stop nattering on about Spaceballs...

I definitely think 'prevent this person from DMing me', 'hide their messages in servers from me' and 'hide my messages in servers from them' should be three separate settings, though.

I agree completely and wish Discord's block feature worked exactly as ordity and FizzyElf suggest. I can only hope the app developers take these very helpful recommendations to heart in the near future.

Also agree. Sometimes it also takes a second to hide the messages sent, so they’re seen anyway. Maybe an option to hide entirely would be something they could implement.

I completely DISAGREE. I think that's a horrible idea. There are many legitimate reasons to see the messages that transpired in direct messages. First of all, if the person threats you or bullies, you might want to file a police report. You need those messages for proof. Also, you can click and hold down on any message they sent you and select "Copy ID." Every message you send or receive generates a unique code (like a serial number.) That number can be emailed to Discord for any violates of their terms of service. Discord uses that number to look up the message in their internal server and figures out if that message violates TOS. This is especially important because discord does not accept screenshots as evidence. If you blocked someone and the messages disappeared, there would no way to capture the unique number.

Instead, this is my suggestion =
If you want the messages to disappear from your end, you can simply close the DM on your end. This is how you do it- Open up the conversation, click on the three dots in the upper right hand corner and select "Close." This will make the whole conversation disappear from your account but not theirs.
Also, blocking certain phrases is way too tedious to implement. Furthermore, people will start misspelling words to override the block. It's not practical. Also even if it was possible, you would be blocking messages that you may not want blocked. For example, let's say you're blocking messages that use the word "nude" or "sex." But they try to message you saying "I hope you're not one of those crazy sex addicts, are you?" The message would not go through, even though they share the same feelings you do.

This feature really needs work. I can't go to another server because there is only one for the game I'm playing. I can easily tell people were talking to the person I blocked because everyone tags who they reply to. I could tell if the context was something I would engage in or not. As it is it is very distracting and it almost makes me angrier to see the stupid X messages collapsed thing. It is a human psychological imperative to discover and the hidden text is basically a taunt. It adds more stress over the situation.

@above, it doesn’t say anything about permanently making them disappear? just not visible to whoever blocked the person in the first place. the messages would still be there, we just don’t want that ugly black bar that says 1 BLOCKED MESSAGE or whatever.

The function of a blocked user not being able to see messages from anyone who has them blocked would be amazing.
Same with getting rid of the "blocked messages" If you block someone, or they block you, both should become invisible to each other.

Please allow me to actually block individuals and not hide them behind a spoiler tag. If I block them, They should be gone, Vanished. Period.

Making someone's messages not visible, is essentially the same thing as making it disappear. It is necessary and important to see the "one blocked message" bar. The messages should NOT disappear from the other person as well, just in case they want to report the person. Also, I have noticed that sometimes people block other people way too easily. Often times without warning or a chance to defend themselves. Therefore, the blocked message notifications discourages people from blocking other people. It is similar to joining a club or group in real life. If you do not like someone in the group, you cannot completely disregard the person. You may choose to ignore them but they will still be in the group, regardless of your feelings for that person. Forcing yourself to confront that person is the best way to settle your differences and become civilized.

I do not care if they see my messages.

If I block someone, They should vanish on my screen and not be hidden behind a spoiler tag.

I agree 100% with what Ordity and FizzyElf said.

There is someone that is in a server I am in with other DJs and friends of mine, as we're club owners and djs online.

She has been bullying me in her owner server (I'm not in it but others have taken screen shots of what she has said and sent them to me), since January of 2021. I have blocked her and yet am still tempted to see what she is saying in the servers we are in together.

I agree. It's easier said than done to just walk away from it and not read the blocked message that's behind what looks like a spoiler tag.

The whole system needs to be change to what Ordity and Fizzy mentioned.

Definitely agree. When I block someone, not only can’t I see any of their messages and no longer can ping them, it should be the same for them. They shouldn’t be able to ping and see any messages from me. That still makes them respond or attack. So, what’s the point. Blocking should be making the blocker feel safe from the person they blocked. It’s either a personal, safety, or mental health reason to block them.
