Android app crashing frequently since upgrading to Android 12

I'm having the same issue, Pixel 4a 5g. Can't switch channels or servers at all. The app is unusable at this point. Hope we get a fix. Try reporting to the discord bug form

Same problem for me. Updated my Pixel 5 to Android 12 yesterday and now the Discord app keeps crashing/freezing when I open the channel list. The content starts flickering and sometimes even the whole phone doesn't react to inputs for a few seconds.

Thanks @Bearolus. This seems to corrected my issue.
Settings > Accessibility > "Automatically play GIFs when Possible." - turn this off.

Update: Open your settings > accessibility > disable automatically playing gifs. You'll have to tap on a gif to play it... But at least the app will work.
Doing this has completely stopped the app from crashing. All they "really" need to do is stop gifs from playing then the sidebar is opened.

Happening on my Pixel 5. Any time I open the sidebar I run a good chance of the Android system wide UI locking up, flickering, and then crashing.
I've tried every typical troubleshooting (clear cache, clear storage, uninstall, reboot, reinstall, and more).
Only thing I haven't done is total system reset.

That's an acceptable temporary workaround. Interested to hear on when we can expect a fix!

It's been crashing for awhile now during the beta. I was hoping that the update to the final release of Android 12 would fix it but nope.

I've got the same crashing/flickering issue since upgrading my pixel 4 to android 12

This is also happening to me on a Pixel 4a 5g, however it only happens when I open the sidebar while there is a gif playing on the screen. Turning off the setting to make gifs animate automatically has kinda fixed this problem for me as long as I don't tap on any gifs

Have had this thread followed but figured I'd toss mine in as well. Pixel 4XL, updated to Android 12, Discord crashes system UI until I turned off automatic GIF setting.

I have a similar problem. I deleted the app and redownload did it, only for it to kick me out any time I try to open it. It simply shows the logo, the sends be back to the app page

Happening on a brand new Pixel 5a, too.

Also on a pixel 5 and experiencing the same issues, with flickering, then system UI asking to "wait" or "close" the Android system UI, while switching between channels or even sending application to background.

I'm not having an issue with Discord crashing, but I actually WANT my GIFs to play automatically. I have this setting enabled on my Android 12 device (Automatically play GIFs when possible) and I have Enable Reduced Motion OFF, but I am still forced to tap on every GIF manually to get it to play.

Throwing in that like others I'm facing the same issue since upgrading on my Pixel 5a. Will be trying to disable GIF auto play to see if that helps... if I can get it to attop freezing up long enough.

I submitted a ticket to the support team, I suggest you do the same. I've been having this issues since the September beta

I'm having the same issue since updating Android 12 with my Pixel 4 XL

I can use discord for about 35 to 40 seconds before it crashes normally. Using pixel 4 on Android 12. It's basically unusable and has been for months. I assume they'll do nothing and maybe add more stickers.

Also seeing this on my Pixel 4a 5G - when swiping to switch channels or servers, the app either freezes completely or flickers / glitches out.
I did a screen recording to demo what's going on since updating to Android 12: https://photos.app.goo.gl/42AvMYNqxQ9miJLJA

Settings / Accessibility and turning off automatically plahing gifs worked for me
Thanks for the tip to a few people.

Same issue on Pixel 5. Sometimes I don't even get to open the server tray before Discord crashes followed by a System UI crash
1 -
The crash is related to gifs. When a gif plays at the same time as an animation(such as opening the sidebar) it freezes the whole system. I have it on video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xiu1DlaK4sg

I'm having the same issue on my P4XL. The latest patch didn't help. Disabling GIF autoplay did.

@MZGSZM: for me, discord was only freezing when I opened the server / channel tray on the left. I was able to work around by going to the users tray on the right, clicking a user and going to "message". That let me open the left tray long enough to get to settings.

It'd be nice if they checked their own support forums though.

I've been seeing this issue in other apps on Android 12. Twitter being one of them. I think this is an issue with Android itself, not Discord.

Upgraded to Android 12 and the app is completely unusable. It seems when there is a gif in the channel the app can't handle you switching/going someplace else and it crashes.

Same issue on a Pixel 5.

Crashing on the server/channel picker. Clearing the storage of the app and signing back in temporarily fixes the problem, however I'm still having issues after a few hours. Pixel 5, Android 12.

Just to +1,
Same deal here
Pixel 5, android 12.0
