Can't use down arrow to read large text messages

If I press the down arrow to read large text messages, the blue selection rectangle moves to the text message below the large text. I want to be able to read large text messages that I need to scroll down to read fully. I cannot currently because it skips to the text message below it. 

This is extremely annoying.
