Discord has a serious moderator issue...
I've been on Discord for about 4 years (was one of many who took to the app to fill a social void caused by the pandemic lockdown protocols in 2020), and while it's been an interesting time on the app, one issue I've consistently had is the anarchic moderation across servers.
There are a lot of large servers that are being managed by people who only end up in that position based on circumstance (ie. being the person who made the server, or being elected by friends), and in many cases the duty of managing a large amount of people reveals that a lot of moderators simply aren't mentally capable or mature enough of doing so.
In my experience, I've had moderators for servers with 10,000+ people group-bully me for making reports on other moderators that were engaging in bullying behaviour in voice channels (Depressions-Antidote), which led to an unexpected and swear-filled ban before I had the chance to delete my data.
I've had moderators of art servers (Art Club) form personal grievances against me for making reports of bullying due to a self-moderating VC system that was easy to exploit for bullying purposes, to then suddenly ban me without my having the opportunity to delete my art from said servers (which is another serious issue on Discord, where Artists will casually post files and then have then locked behind a server ban to be unremovable and then used and downloaded by whoever).
I've also had moderators of art servers suddenly gang-bully me in voice calls (after opting to remain in voice channels so as to maintain anonymity) with the threat of a ban, which then led to the admin of said servers join in on the blatant dog-piling as a means of childishly flexing their power (Huckleberry Art Academy).
The list goes on (and includes smaller servers to a lesser extent), but the point ultimately is that the Discord app has features that are very easy to abuse and lead to moderators taking no responsibility and option instead to resort to bullying tactics to repress people who complain. I want to make it clear that this is an issue that leaves younger or more naive artists victim to bullying and grooming on a platform with no filter on its social interaction features.
