《Discord suggestion》, Improvments to the innactive notification system, for a more healthy and long lasting community
Based on the information I have gotten from support, you will only get one email in which it is basically saying "hey this has happened..." slightly before the account becomes inactive (1 month), I strongly push that there should be a more periodic and time based system to keep discord active, many times I've had friends leave discord never to return, likely forgetting it even existed.
I think that much like mobile games (no matter how annoying) periodic emails of would help overall in keeping people engaged. But wait! your saying, it would get annoying very fast right? It would, unless we can add certain conditions to make it more relevant to the person and overall better thought out than what we have now.
For example any "hey you've missed ..." emails wouldn't be about anything on any server but instead snapshots from their own dms, group chats, and tags. If they were tagged (not including @everyone or roles) a email may be sent out to them saying "hey you missed ..." as long as the prior email wasn't sent recently (1 week?). This would prevent the emails from being totally irrelevant to the person and also make the community longer lasting and prevent spam. This of course would change little to nothing for the time between active and inactive states (like we have now) but come into effect after a account is deemed "inactive", and with that if they are truly inactive, unless someone goes out of their way to talk to them (after a month) then they will feel no difference between that and before. But if someone has friends which care / worry it may be possible to get them to come back. At the end of the day I've just noticed that the current system seems inadequate for keeping a community on long, with the pruning system as well innactive users are only ostracised more if they come back. The less people stay innactive, and the less people stay innactive for long. The less friends we all lose, and the less friends we never get to meet.
Tl;dr
Make a system in which someone would be emailed with the "hey discords been booming while you were away..." message when messaged to in a dm, directly with a tag (in a server), or tagged in a group chat.
It would give a way for old users to be reminded of discord, increasing how long the community can stay together as a whole. by reviving the long dead parts while mending the newly dead ones.
It would also make it so that any account which has no active friends trying to contact them, feel no difference from the current system. (so only someone who has close friends which want to contact with them would get emailed)
These improvements would also have the benefit of having more relevance than the current system due to the limits on what gets sent out as a email.
This is based off of the current "inactive system" where you are emailed slightly before 30 days is up on discord with a "hey you've missed ..." message. I find that in general it is a improvement, and a welcome improvement.
Note: The 10 day's between reminder messages is just a place holder which I think would be good, and secondly you will be able to opt out of these messages of course. Being able to opt out of this while innactive (via your email) or on discord is almost a given. However I hope this will help bring a few forgetful and or loved members back to the community.
