I'm not opposed to this, I just don't think most people would have over 1,000 friends.

I don't see why this problem can't be fixed. I think it should be increased for those who want to have more friends. Maybe set a timer to prevent friend request spam however if someone is receiving friend request's then they should be able to accept as many as they like. It would be useful for people who want to keep track of a large amount of people in case they leave a related server.
    let's all be friends uwu.

I run a small business and my main communication platform with clients is through Discord. I hardly have time to sleep let alone go through the friends list one by one. This REALLY blows.

Discord supports massive servers with hundreds of thousands of people. If each Discord user had more than 1,000 friends, it could be harmful for Discord's bandwidth

I also reached the 1000 Discord friends limit earlier. It really needs to be increased.

For users who wish to expand their friend list, the friend limit should be increased. To address potential spam, a timer can be implemented to space out friend requests. However, users should have the ability to accept as many friend requests as they receive without restrictions. This feature would be particularly beneficial for those who want to keep track of a large number of contacts

To anyone who believes that the friend limit is 1000 for technical reasons, it’s not. In short, It is an arbitrary limit. People have been above the limit for a while. As far as resources go, Discord is designed with this in mind. Someone who has 1000 friends won’t be more expensive on the servers than someone with 100 friends.

    Here's why:

The client never requests a full list from the server, it loads users as you scroll. It does the same thing when you scroll through a list of members on a server. Servers can have up to 500K members for free. Many servers have much more, some reaching as high as 21M as of this post.

I want to note that if someone loads an un-cached list of 1000 people twice; it is the same as loading a list of 2000 people. If two people load a list of 1000 people, it is the same as one person loading a list of 2000. The amount of people who’d be reaching 1000 friends is tiny, and those reaching 2000 are even smaller. Usually, this is irrelevant. This logic only applies when list size matters.

Below are some points that show the expense of some events on Discord. Based on the communication between the client and the server.

Scrolling through a friend list of 1000 friends:

    - 1kb-2kb per user loaded (1MB-2MB total)

    - Only 1 person can do this

    - Relatively rare event

(significantly more rare for those with a large friend list)

Scrolling through a member list on a server:

    - 1kb-2kb per user loaded

    - Any person on the server can do this

    - Relatively common event

    - Larger servers have larger lists and more people to scroll through them

Viewing an image/video that has been reposted/compressed countless times (usually memes)

    - 50kb-200kb per image view

    - 1MB-8MB per video view

    - Everyone present in the chat can view it

    - Many often sent at the same time

    - Very common event (especially on larger servers)

Viewing an image/video that hasn’t been reposted/compressed many times (most things that aren’t memes)

    - 1MB-25MB per image view

    - 6MB-25MB per video view

    - Everyone present in the chat can view it

    - Many often sent at the same time

    - Very common event (especially on smaller servers)

(most of the files I checked were on the higher end of the given ranges)

As you can see, a large friends list is pretty cheap and there is no technical reason to cap the friends list.

Disclaimer: I got these numbers from a small sample size. They are probably fairly close to the average. It’s not uncommon for files to fall outside the provided ranges.

Yes, I’m aware that there are other processes taking place on the servers. I do not think any of them would be significant enough to justify capping the friend list.
