    Hello,

I had exactly the same problem for about a month. I searched up the internet and none of the solutions worked. However, I managed to fix the problem. I will tell you what I did and you can try it to see if it works or not.

First click on the speaker button on the task bar:

Then you will see more than one device. Change the one selected to one of the others available and make sure you have the same one on the Discord app. Keep changing the one on Discord and the one from the task bar until it works.

I hope this works for you.

This link worked for me.  Shortening:

Control Panel -> Hardware and sound ->  Sound -> Communications:

When Windows detects communication activity: Do nothing

This kinda worked for me: https://old.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/61bc5o/discord_muting_all_sounds/dj4kqqg/

FEAR NOT FOR I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION. Go to playback devices on your computer(right click on the sound for windows, not sure how to get there for macs/ linuxes). It should show your bluetooth device as two things, a headset and a headphone. Right click and disconnect the headset. BLAM MAGIC IT WORKS NOW.

***I tried disabling it, but that just kept anything from playing, so just re-enable and then disconnect instead if that happens.

This method prevented my Bluetooth mic from working, but still a good solution if your headset mic isn't your primary input.

My discord started doing this about two or three weeks ago. I am using the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless headset, which is "Certified" by Discord. Like what I assume many of you all have, there are two separate outputs for the headset, a game and a chat output. In the Discord Voice and Video settings, the headset output is listed as the certified one, and the headphones (game output) is somewhere else in the list.

If I change the output to the headphones, the sound for the other devices comes back and works fine. Also, if I go into the sound device properties check then uncheck the "Disable all enhancements" box and click apply it will start working again. Neither of these are what I would call a solution, as it negates the features of being able to isolate the chat sounds.

Two days ago, I did a complete uninstall of Discord. This entailed uninstalling the app, then manually removing the registry entries and app data (Things Discord should be deleting when they uninstall, but that is a different issue.). Upon reinstalling Discord, the problem was solved until today. I will attempt to do a basic uninstall, and let people know how it goes.

    Update:

Neither the basic nor the complete uninstall worked today.

Well I also found this out from someone. IF you have a microphone built into the computer, you can just disconnect from the headset part of the headphones, and connect to your built in microphone and connect to your headphone part of your headphones so that you don't have lack of sound quality! I mean you can do this if you have a built in microphone and your bluetooth mic is trash lol.

I had the same annoying problem. The fix was pretty easy. All I had to do was unpair my bluetooth headphones (Forget the device in Windows) and re-pair them. Then a quick discord restart later, the problem was fixed! Also: My current Input device is set to "Default" which I'm assuming is my headset and the output is set to "{Headphone Name} Stereo".

Same problem. Worked fine for months and then out of the blue when Discord launches, my sound to the speakers stop working until I reboot the computer. I can connect Bluetooth set and those will work but sound will not return to speakers once disconnect Bluetooth or close Discord. I tried removing the Bluetooth set, reboot, test sound and it works, then launch Discord, stops working again.

In the meantime, I did determine the problem is Discord gaining "ownership" of the microphone.. No idea what this ownership entails, I just know it doesn't go away when Discord is closed. I did try the method of going to system tray > right-clicking sound icon > left-clicking "Sounds" > click "Communications" > change to "Do Nothing".  This did not work.

I removed the Bluetooth headphones (so only regular speakers attached), uninstalled Discord, rebooted computer. Tested sound and worked. Installed Discord, it launches and sound immediately cuts off. Re-added Bluetooth headphones and can hear sound that way but not back to speakers until perform a reboot.

What ultimately "fixed" the problem is disabling app access to the microphone in Windows 10 since for some inexplicable reason I can't specifically block only Discord from accessing it.  Not ideal but I rarely use the microphone and can close discord and enable it for the times that I do.

To try this solution: Close Discord and then open Windows Settings > go to "Privacy" > in left column click "Microphone" > under "Allow apps to access your microphone" > toggle to "Off".

Discord, if only for privacy reasons, really should add the ability to On/Off access to microphone and speaker (each separately) in the app itself that is more than just a mute toggle at the bottom. If I want only Discord to not have access to my headset and microphone, that should be an option.

Based on google searches this is at least a four year problem. Its clear that Discord has filed it under "not my problem" so seems the options are cut off the microphone, switch to browser only version, or probably the healthier solution of simply stop using Discord all together.

@Ibraheem Thanks this worked for me. But unfortunately it really kills the sound quality. I'll be swapping it back when I'm not using discord.

I tried Carlos Almeida's method, but it didn't work for me. Got any other solutions?

I had this same issue using a bt headset, What fixed it for me was just having a wired headset plugged in to my PC. Not to use the wired headset, but just it being plugged in seemed to change something. Works great now!

I have a USB-C option for connection on my headset. Connecting to my computer using the USB-C to USB-C allowed for discord and other sounds without compromising the sound quality.

For Steelseries Actics 9, changing the wireless transmitter from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 solved the dual-channel issue.

@theinfamousclam thank you so much, you're solution worked and it didn't damage the sound quality for me.

Hello there, here is a solution that will not remove any quality…

It was already mentioned that there is no enough bandwidth for the mic and speaker, however this is not just the problem. Any Bluetooth headphone connects 2 devices, one for audio only and the other one for communications, so all you have to do is disable the hands-free device, here is how to solve it using windows 10, my device is on Spanish but the solution will work:

On the taskbar, right-click the speaker icon then press the sounds option.

open the option (Playback), and find your headphones, you will see 2 options, right-click on the one that says hands-free and press disable.

Then select your headphones as default.

Extra - enter the communications tab on the top and set it to do nothing. click apply then accept, and done.

Now you can hear everything during the call, but what about the mic? Good news! you can still use your mic. By doing these steps you only disable the extra bandwidth for audio, meaning that you now can use your Bluetooth headphones as mic as well, for this only enter (discord settings > voice & video) select the input device as your headphone with the hands free.

    Done :)

I've also got this issue, when I use bluetooth headphones for voice chat it shuts off audio from all other apps. Quite annoying.

Ibraheem you legend, this works. it was working on the browser but the app wouldn't work for me. Turns out Bluetooth have 2 different options for audio output the first being hands free and the second being stereo. they have to match for you to hear audio from other sources well in a call.

I'm still having this problem and wanted to know if anyone could help. This issue only arises when I use my SkullCandy Uproar Bluetooth headphones, not when I'm just on my laptop, so it might not even be a Discord issue, but a Windows one. Anyways, going into communication settings didn't do anything, and changing my audio output with the speaker setting *technically* worked, but now all the audio from other applications sounds super compressed, so it's more infuriating than anything. Does anyone have any tips? And please don't say "just don't use your headphones"! I'm looking for a solution for my problem, not an escape.

P.S. I apologize if I sound pedantic and rude, it's just that this issue has been bothering me for two weeks now and it's really starting to get on my nerves.

Didnt work for me, it did seems in the drivers from Jabra, with sound I had 2 jabra drivers jabra elite 75T strereo and Jabra Elite 75T Hands -Free AG Audio.

Did disable the first and all problems where sorted. But thanks for the communication explenation, that one did improve the discord experiance while during phone call game sound back with 50% works fine.

I've got this issue for a while now, and it is really annoying.
Steelseries Arctics Pro (gamechat + audio)

It only happens for me when i join a discord channel or someone starts talking. So as soon Discord outputs sound all my other sounds goes towards the output channel of Discord, Which in my case is not the default audio because im using gamechat as output for discord and the rest de default audio output.

switching back and forth audio outputs will fix it until I an another channel.

For so far as I'm reading I narrow the issue down towards Discord programming or a conflict with Windows sound or some sort.

Also tried to change the default output of discord in windows, unfortunate still the same shitty result. No audio when i join discord ( only Discord audio) all the other sounds in windows are being outputted towards the default discord device which I am not using as output in windows. So resulting in no audio !!

Here is the most straight forward method, similar to the most recent post:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/7ofarc/discord_muting_all_my_other_sounds_need_help_im/

For newer versions of Windows 10, go to "Sounds" and click on the text that says "Manage sound devices". "Playback" is now "Output Devices", and "Recording" is now "Input Devices. Disable the any of the options that has "Hand Free" on it. Then ta-dah, everything works. However, the mic on your bluetooth device is not going to work. I guess this is the only way for Windows to not recognize it as a phone call and disable all other audio.

    Mee too.

I had the same issue. I use win 7. I could not hear anything including the system sounds and notifications of discord.

I uninstalled discord but still, I could not hear anything. So I uninstalled my audio driver(Realtek HD Audio Driver) and installed the driver again. It worked. I could hear everything again. I installed discord again and nothing has happened till today. I have not allowed discord to start at system startup bcz I felt that was the reason I could not hear anything. It happened when I enabled to start at system startup and rebooted my laptop. Till today I have had no issues after doing this.

Update : Ok guys. Now the same thing happened again. So what happened is that I could not hear any sound after hibernating my laptop with discord open. What I understood is that You must not have discord running when your system is booting. Discord must not be running during startup.
